A longtime Korean grocery store is expanding its footprint in New Haven, as the family behind Hanmi Oriental Food and Gift Shop opens a new restaurant to share more of its culture.
For nearly 30 years, Hanmi Oriental Food and Gift Shop has been a staple in New Haven’s East Rock neighborhood, serving Korean groceries and goods to the community. Now, the Sim family is building on that legacy with Hanmi Foods, a restaurant next door that began serving customers in March.
At the center of it all is owner Eun Young Sim, known to many as Mrs. Sim, whose warm personality has helped define the business for decades.
Whether she’s answering the phone or greeting customers in person, that hospitality is constant.
“Namimida!” “Gamsahamnida!” Mrs. Sim would say.
Her son, Jae Sim, said that welcoming spirit is part of what keeps people coming back.
“Whenever she’s working, I hear laughing, interacting with the customers,” he said.
The store first opened in May 1998, initially catering mostly to New Haven’s Korean community. Over time, that customer base has evolved alongside the neighborhood.
“These days, we have less Korean customers coming in and more other people who are coming in because they know about the food, they know about the culture,” Jae Sim said.
He credits part of that shift to the global rise in interest in Korean culture, often referred to as the “Hallyu wave.” When the space next door became available, he saw an opportunity to expand the family business while pursuing his own goal of opening a restaurant.
“We think this is all good to show the people to show what Korean culture is,” Sim said.
Local leaders say the restaurant is already making an impression.
“The food here is genuinely delicious. It’s a style called jipbap which is like home style cooking, and you can tell because they put so much love in the food,” said Christine Kim, a member of the New Haven Board of Alders.
Caroline Tanbee Smith, another alder, said the Sim family’s success reflects the city’s entrepreneurial spirit.
“We can see this, Hanmi and the Sims as really a model for what could be possible when generations are able to pass along incredible businesses,” Smith said.
For the Sim family, the expansion represents both a new chapter and a continuation of a decades-long legacy, one still rooted in the same welcoming atmosphere Mrs. Sim has always provided.
“Everybody is like is good!” Sim said.
