22:15

VERSTAPPEN TAKES POLE IN THE RAIN

As expected, no one set a lap of any note in the very wet conditions.

Verstappen takes pole, but the bigger story is Nico Hulkenberg, who sill start alongside him on the front lie after a brilliant performance in qualifying.

Alonso starts behind them in third and will be joined by Hamilton on the second line.

The full grid is as follows:

Verstappen

Hulkenberg

Alonso

Hamilton

Russell

Occon

Norris

Sainz

Piastri

Albon

22:09

Back underway

Q3 is off again but conditions are tough now.

It's hard to see anyone improving as the rain continues to fall.

22:05

Rain getting heavier

It's really coming down now, and it's hard to see anyone improving on their current times.

We could end up with our current top 10 on the grid tomorrow.

This is how it looks:

Verstappen

Hulkenberg

Alonso

Hamilton

Russell

Occon

Norris

Sainz

Piastri

Albon

22:03

Piastri hits the barrier

The McLaren's qualifying is over ad he splns into the barrier.

Haas may have snuck their way onto the front row as Hulkenburg goes second fastest just before the red flag.

Red_Bull_Racing.png

22:00

Verstappen goes fastest

Verstappen goes fastest on a track that is now very wet indeed,

Alonso goes second by a hair, as Hamilton comes in third with an impressive lap in tricky conditions.

21:57

Q3 GETS UNDERWAY

The rain is coming down hard now in Montreal.

This will be a huge 10 minutes for any time looking to challenge Red Bull tomorrow.

21:51

END OF Q2

That was some session.

Williams went fastest as Albon got the tyre situation spot on, with Verstappen jt behind him in second.

Hamilton scraped through in tenth place, while Leclerc and Perez both dropped out.

The other drivers eliminated were Stroll, Magnussen and Bottas

21:47

Two minutes to go

Perez and Leclerc look set to miss Q3 for the second race running.

The rain is coming down steadily now and there is standing water on the track.

21:44

Five minutes to go

Perez, Leclerc and Stroll are all in the bottom five, with Hamilton just one place above them.

Magnussen and Bottas are also currently headed out.

21:42

Albon goes fastest again

With the rain returning, getting those slick tyres on fast is looking like a genius move from Williams.

Albon beats his own fastest time, while Stroll and Perez drop into the bottom five.

21:41

Albon goes fastest

Albon goes under 1:20 and sets the fastest lap, Alonso comes in just behind him.

It looks as though the rain is returning, which may be a concern for those who have changed tyres.

Hamilton eases the pressure as he goes fifth.

Mercedes.png

21:38

Russell goes fastest

The Mercedes pips Verstappen by 0.03 seconds.

The world Champion then puts on slick tyres to try and make the most of drying conditions.

All the other teams seem to be following suit, with the notable exception of McLaren.

Red_Bull_Racing.png

21:37

Verstappen goes fastest

The Red Bull goes fastest with a time just over 1:20.

There'a a brief yellow flag as Stroll slides across the track, but he manages to wrestle back control after a spin

21:35

Q2 GETS UNDERWAY

McLaren are considering slick tyres, and Williams have already made the change for Albon.

The track appears to be drying, and it could be a masterstroke from Williams.

21:33

'He should be banned for such a thing!'

Gasly is not happy with Sainz.

He's accusing the Ferrari of going slowly in purpose to slow down his third sector.

Brundle calls it 'unacceptable' on comms, while Gasly called for Sainz to be 'banned' and gesticulating wildly from inside his car.

21:28

END OF Q1

Hamilton goes third fastest, while Verstpapen pips Alonso to the fastest lap at the last.

Gasly drops out, with Sargeant, Zhou, Tsundoa and De Vries also out of qualifying.

21:25

stroll drops into the bottom five

His teammate has been pushing Verstappen, but Stroll is down to 17th and looking in real danger with a minute to go.

Alonso goes quickest at 0.2 seconds faster than Verstappen.

Mercedes.png

21:23

Russell up to seventh

The Mercedes driver may have wriggled his way out of trouble as he makes it up to seventh.

Leclerc sets a good time after struggling in the first few minutes, while Verstappen leads but Alonso is close behind him.

21:21

Five minutes to go

The table is beginning to shape up in Q1 with Verstappen and Alonso leading the way.

As it stands, the bottom five are Russell, Piatri, Zhou, Tsunoda and Sargeant

Red_Bull_Racing.png

21:19

Verstappen goes fastest again

Verstappen is the first go go under 1:22, while Hamilton goes fourth again.

Russell is struggling, and currently sits in the drop zone at 17th.

21:17

Good time from Alonso

He has a lot of experience in all conditions, and Alonso briefly goes fastest before Verstappen overtakes him again.

Hamilton has been on the grass in a shaky start but is currently fourth fastest.

Red_Bull_Racing.png

21:15

Verstappen goes fastest

The Rd Bull goes fastest by three seconds with a time of 1:24:1.

The Williams then follow him with solid times and go second and third, with Perez in fourth so far.

21:12

Here we go again

We're off again in Montreal, although Zhou doesn't seem overly happy with his car on the radio.

Sargeant has reported rain at turn two on the radio.

60x60_weather_rain.png

21:10

Here comes the rain

As predicted, the rain is on it's way on the weather radar.

The cars will be eager to get out there while the track is at it's dryest.

60x60_red_flag.png

21:06

We have a red flag

There's a red flag as the stewards clear Zhou's car off the track, although he has found away to get the car going again.

Albon, Sargeant and Bottas all got times in around 1:27 before the stoppage.

We should be back underway by 21:10.

21:04

Terrible start for Zhou

Zhou has a power issue and is crawling around the track.

His car is making a very bad noise, and he sounds dejected on the radio.

It seems he can't make it out of first gear, and he's pulled up on the side of the track.

This could be the end of his qualifying.

21:02

AWAY WE GO

The cars are coming out in Montreal.

There's a reasonable amount of spread coming off the wheels on a wet track.

It will be interesting to see how the Mercedes' go in these tough conditions.

60x60_weather_rain.png

20:53

Weather update

It's cloudy at the moment and the track is already wet from rain earlier in the day.

There's more expected in 10 minutes, around the time qualifying will start.

It will be interesting to see which tyres the teams opt for in these testing conditions.

Red_Bull_Racing.png

20:49

Verstappen 'never' looks at numbers

The 25-year-old claims he doesn't look at his numbers, but he is closing in on a  big record.

Senna is a legend in the sport and matching his win tally would be a big movement in Verstappen's impressive career.

If he races anything like he he has done so far this year the Red Bull driver will be in a good position to do so.

It is astonishing to think that the man who this weekend is a near nailed-on certainty to equal Ayrton Senna's total of wins, 41, was not even alive when the great Brazilian died at Imola.

20:33

Half an hour to go

We're closing in on qualifying now in Montreal.

It's a very cold day and there's been a bit of rain about.

There's also an unusual obstacle at the track with rodents running across the track every now and then.

They could bring a new definition to squirelling under breaking.

Red_Bull_Racing.png

20:21

Last year's Grand Prix

In an ominous sign for Red Bull's rivals, Verstappen took pole and won in Montreal last year on his way to a second World Championship.

Sainz came in second, with Hamilton third. It is a happy hunting ground for the Brit historically, though, as he has won seven times at the track in his career.

The crowd looks healthy already this evening.

20:11

How things went in Barcelona

Verstappen was streaks ahead of his rivals in Spain but a fascinating battle took place behind him.

There was a strong celebrity presence in Barcelona, with Martin Brundle up to his usual antics before the race.

Max Verstappen continued his championship defence with a third win in a row at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Red_Bull_Racing.png

20:08

The season so far

It's been a story of Red Bull dominance in recent months, with Verstappen and Perez leading every lap of the past three races.

The Dutchman has won seven races, including the last three, with his teammate taking the other two.

Red Bull have almost twice as many points as any other team, with Mercedes a distant second.

Mercedes.png

20:04

How they went in practice

When they finally got underway, Lewis Hamilton went fastest in first practice.

Verstappen has been dominant so far this year, and a win tomorrow would take him level with Senna on 41 wins.

The Red Bull did go fastest in second practice, but his teammate Perez found the going much tougher.

World champion Max Verstappen was only sixth quickest, but by dint of his recent dominance the Dutchman remains favourite for victory when the competitive action starts on Saturday.

20:01
