Thank you for following along...

That was quite a chaotic hour and a half. There was the delay, some very close run things, including Verstappen almost being caught in Q2, and then he won the day in Q3 - giving the pole position to Charles Leclerc!

There'll be more action this weekend - tomorrow is the sprint race, and Sunday is the full-length feature. Please find Mail Sport's Jonathan McEvoy with the lowdown on today's qualifying below. And keep an eye across the website for more F1 news from what looks set to be a very wet weekend in Belgium.

I hope you have a great Friday evening, and I'll speak to you all again soon. Goodbye.

Verstappen wins! Leclerc on pole! Perez third/second.

George Russell falls to 8th

Verstappen takes the lead in qualifying

He'll drop to sixth

Piastri third and Norris fourth

Leclerc sets the time to aim for

Ferrari.png

17:15

Sainz looks to chase down his teammate Leclerc

Verstappen's five-place penalty looking to be making a big difference

As it currently stands, it would push the Red Bull to seventh, and make it a Ferrari one-two.

There's one lap to change everything...

And then they're back on the track

A long queue of cars to come back onto the grand... we've got a big finish coming.

The cars have come in for one last preparation...

They're all coming for one more burning lap to try and set their best possible grid placing for the Sunday GP.

Hamilton and Russell 8th and 10th respectively

But are they aiming for flying laps?

Ferrari.png

17:09

Carlos Sainz goes... third!

Ferrari first and third - Leclerc #1, Sainz #3.

A little way to go though at Spa.

Max Verstappen quickest - then Charles Leclerc!

I can't keep up!

Norris goes fastest, then Piastri

Alonso has a good time and sets the fastest lap for the time being

Sainz was pole last year...

Verstappen in 2021. Hamilton two of the three before that.

Where's it going today?

Piastri, Stroll, Norris, Hamilton, Leclerc, Russell, Alonso, Verstappen, Sainz, Perez.

Who will be on pole for the big race on Sunday?

The stars are holding back a little in the garage, but finally coming out.

The 12 minutes of Q3 starts

The sun is back out and the Spa track is drying nicely

Q3 starts at 6.03 local time

In just over five minutes...

There will be a delay to the start of Q3

A couple of drivers have gone into the gravel, so they're going to clear that up so they can go full pelt for the next session.

Verstappen somehow made it in 10th place

It looked like he was in trouble - on the verge of the red elimination zone after a difficult middle section. But he somehow got through to Q3.

He'll be at least 15th on the grid... and aiming to be higher.

11th to 15th decided by the end of Q2

11. Tsunoda

12. Gasly

13. Magnussen

14. Bottas

15. Ocon

Tsunoda had the fastest time a moment ago - but he's 11th and out!

Leclerc goes third quickest... Verstappen squeaks through as 10th!!

Alonso jumps from 15th to 6th

Red_Bull_Racing.png

16:51

Verstappen is the driver at risk...

Tsunoda goes quickest overall - then Piastri replaces him

The merry-go-round continues!

Ocon did not get back on the track

He's 11th and out.

George Russell goes quickest overall - then Norris!

Lance Stroll goes third fastest

Hamilton goes fourth fastest

It's changing quickly - one minute to go

Esteban Ocon's problem...

He's gone far too wide at the corner with no name and hit the wall

Esteban Ocon's front wing has gone... he's going to have to pit.

Verstappen leads, Perez second, Leclerc third

Mercedes.png

16:46

George Russell disagrees with the fast/slow/fast policy

Both Mercedes need to set fast times, they're in the bottom five now

Mclaren.png

16:43

Lando Norris didn't set a time

He feels it's time for slicks too.

He has six and a half minutes to set a quick enough time to make Q3.

Valtteri Bottas has gone to slicks, as has Piastri

It's time for dry tyres...

Norris still has to set a time, and the elimination zone also includes Sainz, Hamilton, Russell and Stroll.

Early stages of Q2 fastest

1. Verstappen. 2. Perez. 3. Leclerc. 4. Piastri. 5. Ocon.

Norris IS now on his out lap...

Drivers beginning to set their Q2 times now

I thought Lando Norris had come out...

But he's still in the pits.

11 minutes to go to decide which five drivers are being ejected after Q2.

Piastri says 'it's not too far off slicks'

The top five after Q1

1. Leclerc

2. Verstappen

3. Hamilton

4. Sainz

5. Alonso

Ricciardo had the speed

But all four wheels of the Australian's AlphaTauri went over the white line on corner 3/4, and it meant his sixth fastest time was stricken from the record. He'll be near the pack of the pack for the sprint tomorrow and the big race on Sunday.

16:34

Bad time for Williams

They saw both cars eliminated in Q1, Alex Albon in 16th, and Logan Saregant in 18th. Sargeant was stuck in the pit for a while due to a problem - and in the end, it caught up with him.

Charles Leclerc kept himself safe

He was briefly in danger, but a quick lap got him toward the top of the pack.

That was pretty chaotic...

Those five eliminated

16. Albon

17. Zhou

18. Sargeant

19. Ricciardo

20. Hulkenberg

Daniel Ricciardo gets safe - but his lap time is deleted!

On his second F1 race back in the driving seat, Daniel Ricciardo goes on a flying lap, and looks to make Q2. But, the lap time is deleted! And he's back in the bottom five. The Aussie's out at Q1.

Hulkenberg is out

He was sent out too late - technical problem.

Alex Albon in 17th place... but absolutely flying

He might just make it to Q2...

Two minutes left in Q1

One flying lap?

Nico Hulkenberg last overall and in the pits...

Verstappen fastest now, Piastri second, Sainz third

Will those bottom five change? Albon has been drawn into it, with Bottas jumping to seventh place.

Bottom five: Sargeant, Magnussen, Hulkenberg, Bottas and Zhou.

Sainz leads, Verstappen second, Alonso third

Lando Norris comes into the pit

I think he's going into the garage. He's sat in ninth place.

Possible front wing damage for Lewis Hamilton too...

Sargeant is onto the track

They fixed his gearbox and he's out now.

Lando Norris has possible wing damage...

He's gone off the track and into the gravel... and the team radio say that he has possible damage.

The elimination zone with 10 minutes left of Q1

Ricciardo, Tsunoda, Stroll, Zhou, Sargeant

Russell leads, Verstappen second, Hamilton third

They're changing Sergeant's gear box... then they're getting the tyres on. He should be out in a couple of minutes.

Fifteen drivers have set times so far.

Drivers are working quickly to get out, as there's no knowing where the rain will come back and add more havoc to proceedings at Spa.

Norris takes the fastest lap now, and Alonso jumps to fourth

Hamilton leads from Russell, Bottas third, Sainz fourth

The wet conditions are really visible behind every car. They're going flat out in the conditions though.

16:12

Sargeant is the only not out of the pit lane yet

His team are working on his car still. He was forced to retire early in Hungary last weekend.

16:08

Lewis Hamilton asking for help with his mirror...

He's strapped in, and can't reach it himself. He's in the lane, and the team cannot come out to help him either. Hopefully he'll be ok. They've changed his gloves though.

60x60_chequered_flag.png

16:05

If today's qualifying doesn't happen...

It looks like it will, but the ruling is that if qualifying doesn't happen, they'll race in Championship order - beginning with Max Verstappen, and working down to Logan Sergeant and Daniel Ricciardo.

We're about five minutes away from deciding a different order for Belgium, in the wet conditions...

Red_Bull_Racing.png

16:03

Max Verstappen takes five place grid penalty

Max Verstappen has taken an extra gearbox this weekend, his fifth - exceeding the number allowed for the season. So wherever he finishes in today's qualifying session, he'll move down five places. (I.e. a best start of sixth).

It will be interesting to see if the Dutch driver is hampered by starting down the pack, with his back-to-back-to-back dominance throughout the championship so far, including another win in Hungary on Sunday.

Sky say it's not likely to rain for a little while

But they need the Spa track to drain to allow racing to work...

(That's Sky Sports F1, not the actual sky...)

Time to catch up on news of a big shake-up at Alpine...

Alpine have parted ways with their team principal Otmar Szafnauer and sporting director Alan Permane. It has been 18 months in charge for the former, but the latter has been with Alpine for 34 years. Both have seen their spells ended by Alpine's poor start to this F1 season.

Bruno Famin will be interim leader at Alpine once this Belgian GP weekend is out the way...

60x60_Belgium.png

15:57

Delayed by ten minutes...

The session was meant to begin at 5pm track time (4pm UK time)... but according to Mail Sport maestro Jonathan McEvoy it's been held up by ten minutes.

This morning's practice session was particularly tricky

Five drivers did not even set a lap time, that's how bad the rain at Spa was for the morning session. Drivers are being cautious about the situation at the Belgian track - it was only a few weeks ago that Dutch driver Danilo van ‘t Hoff died in wet conditions on the Kemmel Straight.

Hello and welcome to Belgian GP qualifying

Hello, and welcome to Mail Sport's live coverage of the Belgian GP qualifying session. It's been *wet* at Spa, and there were fears that today's qualifying might be called off - but it looks like they're about to get going.
