The second annual Mile Zero Fan Summit runs all day May 23 at the Grimshaw Mile Zero Regional Multiplex. The inaugural event was the brainchild of both Chance and Carolyn Gerk, who started ideas for the first 2025 event in late 2024.

“About 18 months ago – put it out there just to see what the response was,” says Chance Gerk this week. High Prairie had an event rolling pre-2020, and Chance and partner Carolyn thought it was time for a similar event to return to northern Alberta.

“We thought Grimshaw could put on a similar but smaller event.”

As if they had consulted the Bat-computer – this dynamic duo was correct – an event worthy of coverage in The Daily Bugle and Peter Parker, or The Daily Planet and a story from reporter Clark Kent.

“We hit our expectations and more.”

Small town comic con fun was planned, and while hope was a hundred people or so would make the Mile Zero fan Summit last year – more than 350 people passed through the doors. Chance says the first year was key to working on matters like layout, flow of speakers, panels and more.

Mike Moman, a Grande Prairie comic book creator, who attended 2025 completely agrees with the year-one assessment of the Grimshaw Fan Summit.

“They did their research, went to other cons, talked to people who had been to larger, more established cons,” he says.

“They were really looking for that fun comic con experience, not just putting on a trade show or event of the week,” says Moman.

“As an exhibitor and participant, or visitor, you were never left wondering where you stood. Last year was a blast,” he says. Moman’s comic “Oldsmobiles with Laser Guns” is a Canadian indie science fiction comedy comic following friends navigating a space war in a modified 1983 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, with lasers of course. Trying to get back home, they find themselves in the middle of a civil space war.

Civil space war fans, Star Trekkers, and more are encouraged to attend the May 23 all day event. 3C Cosplay will be on hand, the 501st Legion (Badlands Garrison) will be on hand with Star Wars props, costumes, and photo ops, as well as days slate of presenters and more!

“They were looking to provide a pop culture experience, and it was the correct perspective. It was a fund time that was safe and welcoming. As a vendor it was remarkable, this is an event that supports creators, artists, cosplay, all of it and I’m looking forward to going back, Moman says.

Vendors, collectors, cosplayers, comic booker readers, Pokémon fanatics, Dungeons and Dragoners, red carpeters, Kessel Runners, Top Gunners, Daredevils and/or Deadpools, and more are all welcome May 23 at the Mile Zero Regional Multiplex in Grimshaw, AB.

Gerk says two levels of Dungeons and Dragons role-playing game action may be in the cards, and more.

“This year, we’re hoping for even more excitement.”
