Forget porridge, muesli or even a fry up: over a million Gen-Z Brits are tucking into chips for breakfast six times a week, according to a new poll.

A survey of UK adults conducted last month found that nine per cent of Gen Zers, or more than a million of them, are eating fried spuds first thing in the morning for more than half of the week.

And almost a quarter of 13-28-year-olds - the current Gen Z age bracket - confess to having them at least twice a week as their first meal of the day.

Sixty per cent of Gen Z want to see fried potatoes included in meal deals too - suggesting they want them in every meal of the day.

The research of 2,000 adults conducted by Censuswide on behalf of supermarket Iceland, also found that more than one in ten millennials - 13 per cent - had chips twice a week for breakfast, as did three per cent of Generation X.

Around one per cent of baby boomers - those born in the post-war period between 1946 and 1964 - quietly admitted to having French fries or home-style chips for their first meal of the day each week too.

TikTok is full of videos of youngsters - and a handful of older people - pairing chips with classic fry-up items like bacon, beans and black pudding.

'Forget toast, it's had its day: nothing, and I mean nothing, carries beans quite like chips,' says one user.

'If you want to take them to the next level, top them with a load of sausages.'

Iceland's survey also collected data on where respondents were from - and found that one city was the clear winner when it came to chips in the morning.

Almost a quarter of Mancunians, 24 per cent in all, said they scoffed the British staple for breakfast at least twice a week every single week.

Manchester was closely trailed in the potato stakes by Belfast (20 per cent), London and Leeds (18 per cent) and Birmingham (17 per cent).

As for the types of chips beloved by Brits, the classic French fry is said to lead the way, preferred by a relative majority of four in 10 Brits - followed by straight cut and thick cut chips.

A quarter say the leftfield sweet potato fry is their pick.

Iceland sells no less than eight varieties of frozen chips from curly fries to crinkle-cut chips and waffle fries.

It comes after a survey at the end of last year found that Gen Z will even add chips to the traditional Sunday lunch over the classic choice of roast potatoes.

Food firm Lamb Weston found that 80 per cent of young adults would prefer chips over roasted spuds.

However, spud-scoffing Gen Zers would do well to avoid overdosing on the fries.

A study published last month concluded that three portions of chips a week could be enough to trigger type 2 diabetes.

The study of more than 200,000 adults found a 20 per cent elevated risk of developing the condition when chips were eaten three times a week - rising to 30 per cent if eaten five times a week.

Gen Z is generally accepted as referring to those born between 1997 and 2012, coming after millennials and before Generation Alpha, though the exact start and end points of the generation have never been strictly defined.

Official statistics on how many Brits fall into the Gen Z group therefore don't exist - but the group is currently accepted to be between the ages of 13 and 28, covering between 11million and 13million people.
