Iran is dismissing President Donald Trump’s threat of an “Economic D-Day” as he seeks to pressure the country into reaching a deal to end the war.

“The so-called ‘Economic D-Day’ is a diversion from America’s own crisis: unprecedented debt & surging interest costs,” Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said. “Doubling down on failed policies will only bring further defeat—and enmity of Iranians. US economic terrorism threatens global economy and sovereignty worldwide.”

Trump did not provide specifics about what new economic measures the U.S. could take against Iran, only saying it will be the "most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country." He also warned that other countries could face consequences if they continue doing business with Iran.

“ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences,” Trump said. “Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies — It all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are.”

Last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested in an interview with Newsmax that significant new economic measures against Iran could be coming. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also said the U.S. could continue its naval blockade for as long as necessary.
