Couples can choose the venue, the flowers and even the exact time they walk down the aisle. But they cannot order perfect weather.
Now, some are hiring concierge meteorologists to help them prepare for nearly anything Mother Nature might bring.
For one wedding reception inside a cave in Bend, Oregon, heavy rain was moving toward the venue. If the storm shifted south, water could have flooded the entire setup.
“It was heavy rain basically pushing in, but the cave faced to the south and the storm was to the north,” said Andrew Leavitt, founder of Ironic, a concierge meteorology company.
Leavitt’s team of meteorologists and event planners tracked the storm cell mile-by-mile. Although it passed within two miles of the venue, the wedding went ahead as planned.
“We’re sitting there basically saying, ‘No, no. Trust us, trust us,’” Leavitt recalled. “There is no way it’s going to dip down. The wind is tearing it in the right direction, and you’ll be safe for the evening.”
Leavitt launched Ironic after years of managing large concerts and festivals where dangerous weather could force organizers to change plans quickly.
For weddings, his team begins monitoring conditions about a week before the event. Meteorologists watch for lightning, rain, wind and extreme heat, sending regular forecasts and tracking conditions live on the wedding day.
Leavitt said that type of practical guidance goes beyond what couples typically receive from a weather app.
“Apps don’t think about how hot it will be and if you should bring an extra shirt because you might sweat through the first one and then you have to take family portraits in a couple of hours,” he said.
Weather apps also generally do not tell couples whether to change a hairstyle, add walls to a tent or rent umbrellas several days in advance, Leavitt said.
The service costs $4,500 for a week of forecasting in the United States, putting it beyond many wedding budgets.
NBC 5 meteorologist Ryann Jones said couples can conduct some of their own weather research before selecting a date.
Historical climate information can show the typical temperature, humidity, rainfall and wind conditions for a particular location and time of year. Wind can be especially important for outdoor ceremonies and photography.
“There are a lot of things that you can see and look at climatologically that can help you when making those decisions,” Jones said.
She used that approach when choosing Nov. 12 for her own North Texas wedding.
“Spring here in North Texas is crazy,” Jones said. “It’s the most uncertainty that you get with your weather when we’re talking about rain, temperatures, humidity — all those things paired together. So, I knew spring was out immediately.”
Summer was not ideal either.
“It’s super hot, and I don’t want to put anybody through that,” she said. “Winter is a little crazy. Let’s just go right in the middle. Let’s do fall.”
Jones also considered wind, humidity, available daylight and even the likely color of the sky. Drier fall air, she said, can create a deeper blue backdrop for wedding photos.
The November date also puts her honeymoon near the end of the Atlantic hurricane season.
Still, Jones is not leaving everything to the forecast. Her ceremony will be indoors, with outdoor elements incorporated into the day.
Historical averages can help couples improve their odds, but they cannot predict the weather on one particular date. Jones recommends hiring local vendors — especially florists — who understand the area’s seasonal conditions and how they could affect an event.
