Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport plans to install Islamic foot-washing stations in airport bathrooms, a privately funded project that is expected to cost about $300,000.
Plans for the project were registered with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation on July 31. The airport will add wudu, or ablution, stations to existing men’s and women’s restrooms in Terminal D, according to state records.
Wudu is the Islamic ritual of washing parts of the body, including the feet, before prayer. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The project has drawn criticism from some people on social media who questioned why an American airport would install facilities specifically designed to accommodate an Islamic religious practice.
However, conservative activist Ryan Fournier urged critics to consider the practical reasons for the project, pointing out that the $300,000 cost is privately funded.
“People are freaking out over foot-washing stations at DFW, but let’s look at the actual facts before jumping to conclusions. This isn’t about pushing an ideology, it’s basic airport management,” Fournier wrote on social media.
Airport officials say designated washing stations can help prevent travelers from washing their feet in conventional restroom sinks, which can leave floors wet and potentially create slipping hazards while also damaging counters.
Similar facilities already exist at other major U.S. airports serving large numbers of international travelers, including Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
“Safety & Plumbing: People washing their feet in standard bathroom sinks creates soaked, slippery floors and breaks the counters,” Fournier wrote. “Low-level wudu basins keep the restrooms dry and safe for everyone.”
Fournier also argued that the facilities are hardly unprecedented at major American transportation hubs.
“DFW is one of the busiest travel hubs on the planet,” he wrote, noting that other airports have provided ablution facilities and interfaith spaces for years.
