We’re working on a new type specimen showing our complete font catalogue — something we do roughly every three years, as the blue book is nearly out of print. Rather than organising fonts alphabetically or by category, we wanted to present them sorted by expressiveness, from the most neutral (will Neutral by Kai Bernau come first?) to the most characterful. With over 200 font families, that’s not something we can simply decide ourselves. So Héctor Mangas, our in-house cognitive psychologist, designed a game that helps us with sorting fonts by their intensity of character: you’re shown two fonts and asked which feels more expressive. You pick one and repeat. Once enough people participate, we’ll have a crowdsourced expressiveness ranking of our catalogue.
