Landlab is a Python package for the numerical modelling of Earth-surface dynamics.

The software provides a gridding engine for representing model domains and a collection of reusable components that simulate physical processes. Components share a common interface and can be combined to construct models suited to a particular scientific problem.

Landlab is intended for research in geomorphology, hydrology, glaciology, stratigraphy and related disciplines. It also supplies numerical utilities, data input and output facilities, visualisation tools and Jupyter notebooks covering its principal concepts.

This is free and open source software.

  • Creates regular and irregular two-dimensional model grids.
  • Provides raster, hexagonal, radial, Voronoi-Delaunay and network grids.
  • Attaches data fields to nodes, links, cells, faces and other grid elements.
  • Calculates gradients and net fluxes across grid cells.
  • Supports finite-difference and finite-volume modelling schemes.
  • Builds link-based cellular automaton models.
  • Allows models to switch between compatible structured and unstructured grids.
  • Provides reusable process components with a common interface.
  • Combines multiple components to build coupled numerical models.
  • Models hillslope diffusion, soil creep and erosion.
  • Provides fluvial erosion, sediment transport and flow-routing components.
  • Simulates overland, tidal and groundwater flow.

  • Provides components for marine sediment transport and carbonate production.

  • Writes grid and field data to NetCDF files.
