BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes has announced his return to a hands-on leadership role, taking the helm as CEO of Flop Labs. The new venture centers on developing Flop Network and its native token, FLOP, positioned as essential infrastructure for what Hayes describes as the coming “agentic economy.”
In this vision, autonomous AI systems will independently handle tasks, exchange resources, and settle transactions with minimal ongoing human oversight.
Hayes framed the project simply in his announcement: FLOP is meant to serve as “food” for AI agents.
Just as people need money to purchase necessities, these software agents will require a dedicated currency to acquire computing power for inference tasks, decentralized storage for long-term memory, and other digital resources.
Flop Network aims to create that economic layer so agents can operate and transact without constant human intermediaries or reliance on traditional centralized cloud providers.
The project emphasizes a community-first approach.
I’m coming out of retirement to lead @flop_labs $FLOP is food for your AI agent.
No presale
No VCs
100% fair launchLet’s build the agentic economy’s currency together fam and get fucking rich!
More details to come, but expect a massive airdrop in Q4, genesis block Q1 27 https://t.co/ChnTAAFRUh

There will be no token presale and no venture capital allocation. Instead, Flop Labs is pursuing a 100% fair launch.
A large-scale airdrop is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026, with the network’s genesis block targeted for the first quarter of 2027.
This timeline means token distribution is expected to occur before the underlying blockchain is fully operational, giving early participants exposure ahead of mainnet launch.
Technically, Flop Network is described as a proof-of-useful-inference protocol.
Rather than relying on conventional proof-of-work hashing that consumes energy without external value, miners would supply real GPU compute capacity to run AI inference workloads requested by agents.
Validators would then verify that the work was completed correctly and support decentralized memory storage.
Agents pay in FLOP for these services, while miners and validators earn the token in return.
The design seeks to align network security with productive AI computation, turning useful inference itself into a monetizable and verifiable activity.
Hayes has spent recent years primarily as an investor through Maelstrom and as a widely followed commentator on crypto and macroeconomic trends.
His decision to “come out of retirement” and lead Flop Labs signals a shift back toward building and operating a protocol.
The project remains in an early conceptual stage, with limited public technical documentation or detailed tokenomics available at the time of the announcement.
Interested parties can currently apply via the project’s site to participate as GPU providers (miners), validators, or community promoters and creators, which appears tied to potential airdrop eligibility.
The broader context is the rapid growth of AI agent capabilities.
As these systems become more autonomous and capable of complex multi-step work, they will need reliable ways to pay for and access compute and storage on their own.
Flop Labs is betting that a purpose-built crypto-native currency and settlement layer can fill that gap and become foundational infrastructure for an economy of interacting AI agents.
Whether the network can deliver on its vision will depend on execution in the coming months and years. For now, the combination of Hayes’s track record, the fair-launch structure, and the focus on a timely technological trend has drawn significant attention across crypto and AI communities.
