Mozilla has announced a major Firefox update rolling out over the next several weeks, with Firefox 149 scheduled to release on March 24. The update adds a free built-in VPN, split-view browsing, tab notes, and expanded AI controls. A visual refresh and a new mascot are also part of the broader rollout, according to a post published by Mozilla on March 17.

Firefox 149 Built-In VPN: Free, Private Browsing

Firefox 149 includes a free built-in VPN that routes browser traffic through a proxy to mask IP address and location data. Mozilla states the feature is built around its data principles and requires no additional download or third-party service.

At launch, users in the United States, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom will receive 50 gigabytes of monthly data. Mozilla has not announced pricing or availability for users outside those markets, or whether the data cap will change after launch.

Firefox 149 Split View and Tab Notes Features

Split view allows two webpages to be displayed side by side within a single browser window, making it possible to compare content or copy between pages without switching tabs. The feature rolls out in Firefox 149 on March 24.

Tab Notes adds the ability to attach notes to individual tabs, providing a lightweight way to track context while multitasking. The feature will be available in Firefox Labs 149, Mozilla's opt-in experimental features section, starting March 24.

New Firefox 149 AI Controls and Smart Window

Firefox is adding granular controls for generative AI features, allowing users to turn individual AI functions on or off rather than applying a single toggle to all AI capabilities. Mozilla frames this as giving users control over which AI tools are active in their browser.

A separate feature called Smart Window, previously referred to as AI Window, provides contextual assistance while browsing, including definitions, article summaries, and product comparisons, without navigating away from the current page. Smart Window is opt-in and currently in a waitlist phase for early access. Mozilla has not confirmed which Firefox version will include it broadly.

Firefox 149 Settings Redesign and Navigation Improvements

Firefox is also updating its Settings section with improved navigation and search to make customization easier. Mozilla says the changes are coming to Firefox Nightly starting in April, ahead of a broader release.

Firefox 149 Visual Refresh, Themes, and New Mascot Kit

Firefox is updating its themes, icons, and visual styles on toolbars, menus, and the homepage. Mozilla states these changes are based on user feedback and aim to give the browser a more modern look. Additionally, a new mascot named Kit will be introduced as part of the rebranding effort.

Mozilla has not announced a full release schedule for all the features beyond the March 24 release of Firefox 149.
