Mozilla is introducing new widgets to Firefox's New Tab page, including a daily crossword puzzle generated from AI-summarized news.

The crossword is powered by Particle, an AI news reader that summarizes articles and creates puzzles based on current headlines. The feature is being rolled out gradually, and users on Firefox 153 or later can enable the widgets manually through about:config.

Mozilla has not announced a specific rollout date, but the feature is already documented on its support site.

Firefox’s New Tab Widgets Include a Daily Crossword

The crossword updates daily and pulls from current news topics. Clues are drawn from stories Particle has already processed, and users can click through to the source articles for context.

To play, users click a square to switch between across and down, type in answers, and use a hint button when stuck. The puzzle is also available outside Firefox through a direct web link.

Although the crossword is similar to earlier browser-based word games, it is distinct because it uses AI-processed news content, ensuring the puzzle changes daily and remains relevant to current events. This feature expands Firefox's use of AI beyond search and into the user interface.e.

The crossword is available alongside other New Tab widgets, such as a to-do list, timer, stock checker, world clock, weather widget, privacy report, and a rotating picture of the day.

All widgets are optional. Users can rearrange, resize, or disable them as needed. A "show fewer widgets" option is also available, which TechSpot notes may create space for sponsored stories.

How to Enable Firefox’s New Widgets

The features are being tested with small groups before a broader rollout. Some users already have access in specific regions and locales. Users seeking early access can enable the widgets manually:

  1. Update to Firefox 153 or later, as manual settings are available from this version onward.
  2. Open a new tab, enter about: config in the address bar, and accept the warning to proceed.
  3. Locate the settings that control the widget area and available tools, then toggle them on.
  4. Return to the New Tab page to configure, resize, or disable individual widgets as desired.

Because the widgets are not enabled by default, TechSpot notes that users should expect typical caveats for features in testing, including possible changes or instability before the wider release.

Mozilla is gradually rolling out the widgets and continues testing with small groups before a broader release. Documentation is available on the support site, but no firm rollout date has been announced.

TechSpot notes these changes coincide with Firefox's faster release cycle and upcoming Nova redesign. The regions and locales that will receive the widgets next, as well as when the crossword will be enabled by default, have not been confirmed.
