Police will establish a security zone around the arena starting at 4 p.m.
The NYPD is tightening security around Madison Square Garden with President Donald Trump set to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals Monday night.
Beginning at 4 p.m., police will establish a security zone around the arena between Sixth and Eighth avenues and 30th and 35th streets that will keep most people out.
Seventh and Eighth avenues will be closed to vehicles and general pedestrian traffic.
NYPD officials say no one will be allowed in the zone unless they have a purpose to be there, like a ticket to the game, a train leaving from Penn Station, a visit to a business or some other authorized reason.
Everyone entering the zone will be screened at five designated entry points, similar to the protocols in place on New Year’s Eve.
During most playoff games, both at home and on the road, the Knicks have hosted watch parties outside the Garden on Plaza33. The NYPD, in coordination with the Secret Service, cancelled Monday night’s watch party as the Knicks look to go up 3-0 on the San Antonio Spurs.
"We could not support watch parties right outside the Garden," Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news briefing. "We are looking forward to bringing back watch parties for Game 4."
Some Knicks fans say that while they understand, they feel slighted that some of the festivities around the first NBA Finals game played at Madison Square Garden in almost three decades will be curbed because of Trump's attendance.
"I think it still would have been cool if everyone would be able to be here and still celebrating around MSG, because if they win, everyone's going to want to be outside here,” Ryan Scott said.
"I do feel sad, because the fans have been waiting for a while. I think they should be able to enjoy it outside” Gisele Cintron added. "But it is what it is. We'll make the best of it. New York always has fun no matter what.”
Madison Square Garden and the Knicks are urging anyone with tickets to Monday night's game to give themselves at least two hours just to get inside the arena.
There will be TSA-level security and a no-bag policy to make the security screening as quick as possible.
"We do not want you to miss tipoff, so please, leave backpacks, purses, handbags, briefcases and other containers at home," said Matt McCool, special agent in charge of the New York Field Office of the Secret Service. "Arriving early will help ensure a smooth screening process and allow you to enjoy the full game experience."
Tonight’s game comes on the heels of a stabbing spree inside Penn Station Sunday night.
Police say around 7 p.m., an individual in emotional distress stabbed six people at random. Amtrak police quickly took the suspect into custody, and all six victims were taken to local hospitals.
NYPD officials say the incident will not impact security Monday night.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who will also attend Monday night's game, announced the city will host a watch party for Game 3 in Bryant Park. It will be free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required.
There will also be two other watch parties held in Central Park and at Brooklyn Bowl.
