The Knicks are in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.
What better way to commemorate the Knicks making the NBA Finals than with some new ink?
Fans across the city are marking a historic playoff run by marking their skin — getting Knicks tattoos.
Henri Edwards went to Live By the Sword, a tattoo and piercing shop in Union Square, to get his. He’s been a fan his entire life.
“I’m gonna get my Knick tattoo that I said I would get if they ever made it to the Finals,” Edwards said.
“I got a little throwback picture of me when I was in 1999, so you know, Allan Houston, whatnot,” he explained. “Living in Chelsea and born in Chelsea, being able to walk down to the Garden and go by the Garden is probably one of the little historical things that I get to do.”
There’s something about this particular Knicks team, though, that’s special.
“They’re playing like a whole family — like one of those teams that you actually grew up, that you saw back in ‘99 that, they played together. They played for each other. The hustle, the grit,” he said. "It's just a pretty spectacular type of run watching these guys on the court, off the court.”
At East Village Tattoo, Robert Lippens offered hand-drawn designs inspired by an incredible season of basketball.
“I had these moments in my head, and I feel like I could see these guys when I close my eyes, ‘cause I watch so much Knicks basketball,” Lippens said. “So it was just fun to get that out.”
Lippens usually tattoos in New Jersey, but was in the city at his brother-in-law’s shop to capture the energy that’s taken over during the playoff run.
“It's the one team, it’s the one sport where there's, there's no other, I mean the Brooklyn Nets, but that's, that's kind of new,” he said. “The Knicks — the Knicks are it. So it really unites the people. And basketball, there's just so much style and fashion. It's a lot like the city. So it just brings, it brings the soul out of the city.”
Back at Live By The Sword, Edwards was getting the Knicks logo on his forearm, with a little added twist: a shining light motif like the bat signal.
He’s hoping to add on to the ink after the final whistle.
"2026 [is going to] go here. I’m going to let him pick where he wants to put it," he said. "All they gotta do is finish the job."
