The women’s professional soccer team Gotham FC will join NYCFC at Etihad Park, both teams, Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced in a joint press release Tuesday.

Gotham FC will begin playing home games at the Willets Point stadium, located next to Citi Field and near the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, in 2028, officials said. It will be the city’s first soccer-specific stadium.

The team currently plays its home games in Harrison, New Jersey.

“We are building one of the world’s most iconic clubs and helping define the future of women’s sports. Our move to Etihad Park reflects that ambition, and we are deeply grateful to New York City FC for their vision and commitment to helping make this historic moment possible,” Carolyn Tisch Blodgett, governor of Gotham FC, said in a statement.

The 25,000-capacity space is set to open next spring. According to the mayor and governor’s offices, the stadium will be the first all-electric outdoor sports venue in the U.S., and is being built with entirely union labor.

“It is high time that Gotham FC has a world-class soccer specific stadium where they can play that world class soccer right here, in the city they represent,” Mamdani said in a press conference Tuesday.

“It is an investment in our young female athletes, who are too often overlooked,” the mayor said.

According to the press release, the stadium will also host Olympic soccer matches in 2028, concerts and other events. The space will have a permanent locker room and a Five Boroughs Food Hall.

The move comes after Gotham FC won its first continental title and a second NWSL championship in three seasons.

“This is all about giving the women what they’ve deserved all along,” Hochul said during the press conference. “They deserve the pay, they deserve the facilities, they deserve the fans, and we’re going to be delivering that right here in New York.”
