I tried crocheting spiked stitches using different layers of the posts shown below when creating each box. The downloadable file includes visuals, and the crochet tutorial below also has step-by-step instructions to show you how.
Let loose on your crochet hook with just one ball of Red Heart Super Saver Bitty Stripes with a 5.5 / I/9 crochet hook. It will create a 78" long x 6" wide scarf. Once you understand how it works, you can put the pattern down and enjoy TV time.

1st row: RS. 1 dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 2 ch. Turn. 1 block made.
2nd row: Ch 6. 1 dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 2 ch. (sl st, ch 3, spike 3 st, spike 2 st) in ch-3 sp of prev row, 1 dc in turning chain to anchor stitch. Turn. 2 blocks made.
3rd row: Ch 6. 1 dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 2 ch. (sl st, ch 3, spike 3 st, spike 2 st, dc) in ch-3 sp of prev row. (sl st, ch 3, spike 3 st, spike 2 st) in ch-3 sp of prev row, 1 dc in turning chain to anchor stitch. Turn. 3 blocks made.

9th row (don’t make new beginning box, make new last box): Slip st across of the top of the stitches to the top of the ch-3, Ch 3. (spike 3 st, spike 2 st, dc). Rep 8th and 9th rows until you have 91 blocks in the length.
Last rows (no new boxes on either side: Slip st across of the top of the stitches to the top of the ch-3, Ch 3. (spike 3 st, spike 2 st, dc). [(sl st, ch 3, spike 3 st, spike 2 st, dc) in ch-3 sp of prev row] Rep from [ ] across. Last box, (sl st, ch 3, spike 3 st, spike 2 st) in ch-3 sp of prev row, 1 dc in turning chain to anchor stitch. Keep repeating the last row until you reach corner. Fasten off.
