Mozilla is set to release Firefox 149 on March 24, introducing a major overhaul of the browser’s ecosystem. One of the most notable additions is a built-in, free VPN, designed to reduce reliance on third-party extensions that may pose risks to user security and privacy.

The VPN operates through a proxy system to mask users’ IP addresses, aligning with Mozilla’s stated commitment to transparency and avoiding questionable data practices often associated with free services. Users will receive a monthly allowance of 50 GB of data.

Initially, the feature will be available in four key markets: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. While the data cap is sufficient for general browsing, high-definition streaming could quickly consume the monthly limit.

Firefox 149 also expands its productivity features. Aside from the redesign, a new Split View mode allows users to view two web pages side by side within the same window. Additionally, Tab Notes, available through Firefox Labs, enables quick note-taking directly within active tabs, improving workflow efficiency.

Another new feature is the Smart Window, an evolution of the previous AI-powered window concept. It allows users to adjust browser settings, summarize articles, and compare products without leaving the current page. This feature will be optional and initially accessible through a waitlist for early adopters.

Mozilla is also introducing Kit, a new official mascot that reflects the browser’s updated visual identity. The red fox character appears at key moments, such as onboarding and feature discovery, aiming to make the user experience more approachable.

These updates are part of Mozilla’s broader strategy to strengthen Firefox’s position in a market dominated by Chromium-based browsers, with further personalization features expected soon. What would you like to see in a new version of Firefox?
