Friday’s update came two weeks after the DOH said the source of exposure in the deadly outbreak had been “eliminated.”
Nine people have now died in connection with a Legionnaires’ outbreak on the Upper East Side, city health officials said Friday.
“I’m saddened to share that 2 more people have died in connection with the UES Legionnaires’ disease cluster,” the city’s health commissioner, Dr. Alister Martin, wrote in a social media post. “We mourn each loss, and our hearts are with their loved ones.”
“These cases were diagnosed weeks ago, and the source has been eliminated,” he added. “Thanks to aggressive remediation, no one has been diagnosed or reported new symptoms in over three weeks, and people in the area are not at increased risk of exposure.”
Martin said one person remains hospitalized in connection with the cluster.
“Our investigation continues as we analyze samples collected from cooling towers and patients,” he wrote.
Friday’s update came two weeks after Martin said the source of exposure in the deadly outbreak had been “eliminated.” At the time, seven deaths had been linked to the cluster.
“We can confidently close this phase of our response, because the incubation period — meaning the stretch of time during which new illnesses can arise — has passed,” he said at the time.
Legionnaires' disease is a form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, which grow in warm water and can spread in building cooling systems, hot tubs and showerheads. In many cases, people contract the disease by inhaling tiny droplets of contaminated water — Legionnaire's doesn't spread person-to-person.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the illness is treatable, but it is fatal in about 10% of cases.
Last year, seven people died and more than 100 were sickened during an outbreak in Harlem.
