Thanks to everyone who came to the GA. This GA had the largest number of Pirates from a wide variety of countries in a long time. We held quorum with 9 parties voting. In addition, a lot of old and familiar friends came by to visit. In total about 15 different countries were represented.
As usual we discussed our continued UN engagement, support for Pirate activities, publication of policy blogs, Think Twice 5, PPI’s finances, membership fees, and the need to keep the organisation accessible to both established and emerging Pirate parties.
A statute amendment to alter the statutes to weighted voting, one that would reduce the vote of non-paying members, ended without a clear majority. However, we made the decision to add a clause in our affiliation fees rules that members facing financial difficulties can pay an appropriate reduced amount, in line with the existing rule that no member should pay more than 2% of its previous annual income.
A major decision was the unanimous approval of a statute amendment allowing membership applications to be submitted up to and during the GA, making it easier for new organisations to join PPI. If your party is interested in joining, please consider making an application for our next winter GA in January.
We also discussed the future of PPI’s technical infrastructure after the current service arrangement ends. Members approved a temporary continuation of essential services while the Board explores long-term options.
During any other business, we seemed to agree on the need for strengthening global participation, including the possibility of a Global Pirates activist group for individual members. Such a subgroup of PPI could be a venue for professional internships and volunteers who may not be connected to a national Pirate party. This could create a space for Pirates in countries without an active party, or for supporters who want to contribute independently through research, media, and UN-related work.
We look forward to seeing you again at the Think Twice conference on Oct. 17 in Brussels or the next GA.
