Mirae Asset Group, having completed its acquisition of cryptocurrency exchange Korbit, is now moving forward with a large-scale capital injection of 50 billion won, or approximately $35.29 million. The deal has already been noted as the first instance of a financial group affiliate acquiring a domestic cryptocurrency exchange, and the capital infusion — carried out immediately following the acquisition — is understood as a move to lay the groundwork for expanding the group’s digital asset business.

According to cryptocurrency industry sources on Aug. 13, Digital X Co., Ltd., the operating entity behind Korbit, held a board meeting the previous day and resolved to proceed with a third-party allotment rights offering. The newly issued shares consist of 10,078,614 shares of common stock, priced at 4,961 won per share. The total amount to be raised is approximately 50 billion won, with all new shares to be allotted in full to Mirae Asset Consulting, the company’s largest shareholder. The payment deadline is scheduled for Aug. 27.

This capital increase represents the first large-scale capital injection carried out immediately after Digital X’s incorporation into Mirae Asset Group and the completion of its corporate name change. Korbit Co., Ltd. had previously changed its corporate name to Digital X Co., Ltd. on May 11 as part of a broader organizational restructuring. The exchange’s service name, “Korbit,” will be retained for the time being but is expected to be changed at a later date. Digital X described the purpose of the capital increase as an emergency fund-raising measure aimed at improving its financial structure and achieving its business objectives.

Mirae Asset Group envisions developing Digital X not merely as a cryptocurrency exchange but as a platform bridging traditional assets and digital assets. Park Hyun-joo, Global Strategy Officer of Mirae Asset Group, had previously signaled the group’s commitment by positioning Digital X as a key pillar in realizing what he referred to as “Mirae Asset 3.0” following the Korbit acquisition.

Mirae Asset Consulting currently holds a 97.15% stake in Digital X, making it the overwhelmingly dominant majority shareholder. The company had earlier invested approximately 130 billion won to secure management control of Korbit and received merger approval from the Korea Fair Trade Commission last month. It has since further consolidated its control by acquiring the remaining shares.

Industry observers view the latest capital injection as a substantive move aimed at securing competitiveness in the digital asset market. Rather than simply completing the acquisition, Mirae Asset has committed a significant amount of additional capital, signaling that it has entered into full-fledged business development mode. The funds raised are expected to be deployed toward strengthening business competitiveness, including reinforcing the capital base and upgrading services.

A Digital X representative, however, indicated that it would be difficult to officially confirm the rights offering decision. Mirae Asset Consulting plans to disclose detailed information regarding the capital increase through official regulatory filings in due course.
