The core heart of the next-generation nuclear power plant being promoted in the United States will be manufactured with Korean technology.

Doosan Enerbility announced on August 14 that it signed a contract to manufacture key equipment for a sodium reactor with TerraPower, an advanced nuclear technology company in the United States. Under this contract, Doosan Enerbility will manufacture and supply major components directly linked to the safety and operation of the SMR, such as the reactor containment vessel, reactor support structure, and reactor internal structures.

This order is the result of multi-year cooperation following the manufacturability review contract signed in December 2024. Doosan Enerbility has gone through the process of developing and applying design improvements for the successful manufacturing of TerraPower’s first unit.

The equipment will be supplied to a 345MW advanced nuclear power plant under construction in Kemmerer, Wyoming, United States. This project is considered one of the first next-generation nuclear power projects to enter the commercial-scale construction phase in the United States. Based on policy support from the US government and a construction permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), construction began in the spring of 2026.

The reactor designed by TerraPower is a Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) type that uses liquid sodium as a coolant instead of water. This is evaluated as a fourth-generation reactor technology that effectively transfers the heat generated during the nuclear fission process. In particular, it features the ability to increase power output up to 500MW when combined with a molten salt energy storage system.

Kim Jong-doo, head of the Nuclear Business Group at Doosan Enerbility, explained, “This contract was signed based on the trust built with TerraPower,” and added, “We will execute the project without any setbacks to expand our role in the global supply chain.”
