GC Wellbeing announced on August 14 that the research results confirming the analgesic effect of Laennec Inj. and the synergistic action observed when co-administered with steroids were published in ‘Scientific Reports’, a sister journal of Nature.
This research was jointly conducted by GC Wellbeing and a research team from Yonsei University, analyzing the mechanism of action of Laennec Inj. through an animal model with induced pain. According to the research results, the group administered with Laennec Inj. showed a noticeable decrease in pain sensitivity. Laennec Inj. exhibited the characteristic of its analgesic effect increasing in proportion to the administered dose, and it was found to suppress pain by preventing excessive excitation of spinal nerves and regulating specific signal transduction pathways.
A particularly notable part is the effect of co-administration with steroids. When a low-dose steroid with a minimal analgesic effect was co-administered with Laennec Inj., a pain relief effect equivalent to that of using a high-dose steroid alone was confirmed. This serves as a basis for drastically reducing steroid usage in clinical settings.
Laennec Inj. also significantly alleviated weight loss, which is a representative side effect occurring during long-term steroid administration. The group administered only with steroids experienced a sharp drop in weight to an 88% level compared to normal, but the group co-administered with Laennec Inj. maintained a normal weight and showed a stable condition.
Jeong Si-young, Head of Research and Development at GC Wellbeing, explained, “This research is an achievement that scientifically proves the pain control mechanism of Laennec and the possibility of co-administration with steroids,” and added, “It could become a new treatment strategy for patients concerned about steroid side effects.”
Originally, Laennec Inj. is a prescription drug approved for the purpose of improving liver function in patients with chronic liver disease, using ingredients extracted from human placenta. Recently, it secured successful results by proving its liver function improvement effect again through a Phase 3 clinical trial for high-dose intravenous (IV) administration.
Based on the Phase 3 clinical trial results, the company plans to apply for a change of permission to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety within the year.
