Over 800 million galaxy devices worldwide set to become ‘Digital Dollar’ wallets.
Over 800 million Galaxy smartphones distributed worldwide are transforming into wallets designed to hold ‘digital dollars.’ This development comes as Samsung Electronics significantly strengthens the stablecoin functionality within Samsung Wallet, embarking on a strategic expansion of its virtual asset-based financial ecosystem.
According to the virtual asset media outlet Sandmark, Samsung Electronics will sequentially introduce features for opening stablecoin accounts, cross-border remittances, and in-store payments within Samsung Wallet, starting with select countries this year. While payments were previously restricted to registered credit or debit cards, users will moving forward be able to pay for goods directly using stablecoins stored in their wallets. This creates an environment where living expenses can be seamlessly sent to children studying abroad without routing through traditional banks, or where immediate local payments can be executed.
This strategic move by Samsung Electronics differentiates the company from existing virtual asset operators by leveraging the overwhelming user base of Samsung Wallet, which currently operates in 61 countries. The structure positions 800 million devices worldwide, including 19 million domestic users, as potential stablecoin adopters. Samsung Electronics has already established a foundational foothold, having supported Bitcoin and Ethereum through its non-custodial ‘Samsung Blockchain Wallet’ since 2019, while also providing balance verification features in partnership with Coinbase in the United States.
Industry observers analyze that Samsung Electronics’ full-scale push into the stablecoin business serves as a strategic maneuver to prepare for the artificial intelligence (AI) era, extending far beyond the simple addition of a payment method. Because stablecoins operate without borders or business hour restrictions, they are considered the optimal vehicle for AI agents that perform tasks on behalf of users to directly process reservations and payments. The display of 1500USDC on the Samsung Wallet screen revealed at the Galaxy Unpacked event in July is also interpreted as a deliberate component of this broader strategy.
Concrete moves to secure infrastructure at the Samsung Group level are also materializing. In May, Samsung Securities, Samsung SDS, and Samsung Card resolved to acquire a 4% stake in Dunamu, the operator of the virtual asset exchange Upbit, for a total of $408 million. During an earnings announcement on July 30, Samsung SDS CEO Lee Joon-hee indicated that the investment represents a strategic choice aimed at expanding into the stablecoin and AI payment infrastructure sectors.
Lee Dinham, the executive in charge of smartphones at Samsung Electronics, expressed a clear intention to implement fast and reliable transfers of digital value through Samsung Wallet. He emphasized the goal of building a financial ecosystem that connects payments, rewards, and digital assets into a single, integrated experience. Through these initiatives, Samsung Electronics plans to finalize a connected financial environment that users can tangibly experience.
