On Aug. 14, the domestic stock market continued its unstoppable upward trend, boosted by strong buying momentum from foreign investors. The KOSPI index achieved the remarkable feat of breaking through the dream height of the 7,000 mark at one point during intraday trading, but closed at the 6,970 level as profit-taking orders emerged ahead of the three-day holiday leading up to the substitute holiday for National Liberation Day (on Aug. 17).
Amid signs of stabilization in major United States inflation indicators, the index expanded its gains as foreign capital heavily flowed into large-cap stocks with high market capitalization overall, including major semiconductor stocks.
On this day, the KOSPI index ended trading at 6,977.94, up 164.60 points (2.42%) from the previous trading day. This marks an upward trend for 5 consecutive trading days.
As strong buying pressure entered early in the session, the index immediately surpassed the 7,000 mark and soared to an intraday high of 7,010.86. However, entering the afternoon, retail and institutional investors poured out sell orders to avoid holiday risks, causing the index to pare some of its gains.
The KOSDAQ index also closed higher in tandem. The KOSDAQ finished the session at 864.65, rising by 3.28 points (0.38%) compared to the previous session. It climbed to 868.07 early in the session, but showed a relatively modest upward trend as the concentration of funds into the KOSPI market intensified.
Foreigners ‘Sweep Up 3 Trillion Won’ vs Retail and Institutional Investors ‘Realize Profits’
The undisputed leading players who shifted the dynamics of supply and demand in the securities market were foreign investors.
Foreigners poured explosive buying pressure centering on top market capitalization stocks, such as large semiconductor stocks, automobiles, and secondary batteries, net buying 3.038 trillion won (about $2.14 billion) in a single day. Foreigners purchasing more than 3 trillion won in a single day on the KOSPI market is a record-breaking scale, one of the few instances seen this year.
On the other hand, retail and institutional investors, who pressed the sell button in time with the intraday breakthrough of the 7,000 mark, recorded massive net selling. Retail investors net sold a total of 1.9847 trillion won, engaging in extensive profit realization. Institutional investors also showed a selling dominance totaling 1.0269 trillion won.
In the KOSDAQ market, the supply and demand patterns of retail investors versus foreign and institutional investors appeared in reverse. In the KOSDAQ market, retail investors net bought 315.1 billion won to support the index, while foreigners and institutions each recorded a selling dominance, limiting the upper range.
Overall Strength in Semiconductors, Automobiles, and Secondary Batteries
The stock market on this day displayed a textbook large-cap market trend, pulled by the semiconductor dual carriage of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, and pushed by the automobile and shipbuilding sectors led by Hyundai Motor.
Influenced by the favorable performance of technology and semiconductor-related stocks in the United States New York stock market overnight, strong funds gravitated toward domestic representative semiconductor stocks.
Samsung Electronics closed the session rising 2.43% compared to the previous trading day. It soared to 275,500 won at one point during intraday trading, and its trading value easily surpassed 1.5 trillion won.
SK hynix surged 3.26% from the previous session, bolstered by news of a positive mid-to-long-term outlook for the semiconductor industry within the United States stock market.
Among the top market capitalization stocks on this day, the stock that delivered the most dazzling performance was Hyundai Motor. Hyundai Motor skyrocketed by a massive 8.24% compared to the previous trading day, driving the index’s rise. Expectations for earnings improvement and an atmosphere of easing export risks to the United States acted as favorable factors. SK Square rose 3.31% amid analysis reevaluating the value of its ICT and semiconductor subsidiaries.
In the KOSDAQ market, the flow diverged between large-cap biopharmaceutical stocks and secondary battery and robot stocks.
EcoPro closed 1.63% higher, supported by the recovery of investment sentiment in secondary batteries. Rainbow Robotics: Showed a 0.80% upward trend in line with the policy to foster the robot industry. Alteogen struggled, falling 1.10% as profit-taking orders emerged.
Won/Dollar Exchange Rate on a Slight Downward Trend
In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the exchange rate of the won against the dollar (won/dollar exchange rate) ended daytime trading (as of 3:30 p.m.) at 1,418.3 won, down 1.1 won from the previous trading day.
As a gradual slowdown in inflation indicators, such as the United States Producer Price Index (PPI), was confirmed, weight was added to the possibility of the US Federal Reserve (Fed) ending early or postponing its interest rate hikes, which in turn softened the global strength of the dollar. The fact that foreign investors bought over 3 trillion won in domestic stocks, pouring out sell orders to convert dollars into won, is also analyzed as a factor that spurred the decline in the exchange rate.
Stock market experts collectively state that while the preference for risky assets following United States price stabilization is expected to be maintained for the time being, caution should be exercised regarding the short-term price burden resulting from the continuous surge over 5 trading days.
A securities industry official diagnosed, “The fact that warmth has spread across the major KOSPI sectors, such as automobiles, shipbuilding, and secondary batteries in addition to semiconductors, proves that the physical strength of the domestic stock market has become that much more robust,” but added, “However, as profit-taking orders emerged immediately after entering the 7,000 mark, whether it can successfully establish a firm foothold above the 7,000 mark right after the golden holiday ends will be the core key determining the direction of future additional rises.”
