Yahoo! Research Fellowship to Thomas Lukasiewicz

Thanks to a generous gift from Yahoo! to Professor Georg Gottlob, the Computing Laboratory was able to attract top scientist Thomas Lukasiewicz as a Yahoo! Research Fellow and Departmental Lecturer.

Thanks to a generous gift from Yahoo! to Professor Georg Gottlob, the Computing Laboratory was able to attract top scientist Thomas Lukasiewicz as a Yahoo! Research Fellow and Departmental Lecturer. Thomas will start his lectureship and Yahoo! Research Fellowship on 1 April 2010. He joins the Computing Laboratory's Information Systems Group to undertake research in the area of automatic Web data extraction, such as the development of a general model of knowledge representation and reasoning for integrating different sources on the Web. The work is directed towards possible key technologies for the future Web, such as semantic searching. Thomas will also contribute to the Computing Laboratory’s teaching programme in the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and databases.

Thomas Lukasiewicz, PhD (1996, Univ. Augsburg) and Dozent (2001 TU Vienna) previously held research positions in Germany, Italy, and Austria. From 2001 to 2004, he held a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship by the European Union at the Department of Computer and System Sciences of the University of Rome "La Sapienza". From 2004 to 2009, he was the holder of a prestigious Heisenberg Fellowship (equivalent to an Associate Professorship) by the German Research Foundation. He has over 100 publications, most of which at top conferences and in leading journals such as Artificial Intelligence, ACM Transactions on Database Systems, ACM Transactions on Computational Logic. He received the IJCAI-01 Distinguished Paper Award at the 17th International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence jointly with Thomas Eiter.
