On Wednesday 15th January, former head of department Professor Sir Tony Hoare gave a seminar entitled “The unreasonable power of algebra” marking his recent 80th birthday. The talk, given in the seminar room bearing his name was very well attended with the overspill audience able to follow via videolink in the Christopher Strachey Room next door.

Following his talk, a reception was held in the central ground floor area of the building when Sir Tony and Lady Jill Hoare unveiled a commemorative photograph of themselves as they formally opened the newly refurbished areas of the Robert Hooke Building (RHB).  The Doctoral Training Centre in Cyber Security, teaching and social space for the Department now sit across two floors of the shared building,  which is just a few minutes walk from the Department’s main Wolfson building.

Speeches were made by Professors Bill Roscoe and Alex Halliday (respectively head of department and division) congratulating Tony on his continuing influence on computer science, spanning many years. Thanks were also made to Sharon Lloyd and Joe Atherton and his team for their tremendous work on the successful building refurbishment. Everyone looked forward to the continued growth of the department in the coming years.
