Team reach final of ACM SIGMOD 2015 programming contest 

A team consisting of three MSc students from Oxford, UCL, and RHUL, including Oxford’s Lambros Petrou, has been selected  among the finalists of the ACM SIGMOD 2015 programming contest and will present their system prototype at the SIGMOD conference in Melbourne, Australia on June 2, 2015. The final winner of the contest will be announced during the conference and will win the prize of USD $5,000.

ACM SIGMOD is the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Management of Data. Theirs is the premier conference on database research. It hosts each year a programming contest addressed to research students, where the contestants are called to build a system that solves a specific big data management problem. The contest is organized this year by the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the Chair of Database Systems at Technische Universität München (TUM).

This year, the challenge was to build a system to efficiently support thousands of queries over a relational database under heavy transactional updates. An example of proposed workloads: 100,000 transactions with several million of tuples modified affecting up to 35 relation tables and around 400,000 validation requests with tens of queries each.
