Richard Baker, a Doctoral student working with Ivan Martinovic, has been shortlisted as a finalist for the EPSRC Connected Nation Pioneers Competition. The UK-wide competition recognizes exceptional contributions towards the development of a ‘Connected Nation’. It is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Richard’s entry is an early conceptual architecture for generalising wireless intrusion detection systems, to integrate together the disparate intrusion detection concepts that exist for individual technologies. Along with a high-level design there is a prototype system that can monitor many possible modes of communication using the same underlying hardware, with new ones requiring only a software change to add. The goal is to have a system that can reconfigure to support any emerging wireless technology with only configuration changes. 

The idea was assessed on research potential, 'pioneering-ness' and applicability to industry. There will be a final held in October at the Defence Academy, Shrivenham, and results will be announced in November.
