La Poutine Week has crowned Kahleigh Dubois the winner of this year’s festival. She was the best in the province last year too. What’s her secret? The French fries! Kahleigh says she only uses made in Manitoba McCain fries. If you’re thinking you’re too late to try her Sweet Home Manitoba poutine, you’re in luck. She tells me they plan to keep serving it up for a couple more weeks at Kahleigh’s Brew Barn in Riverton.

BEST ORANGE JUICE EVER!My wife Jackie and I were at De Luca’s South Landing last weekend to pick up some Super Bowl snacks and one of the owners, Paolo De Luca, asked if we had tried their orange juice yet. It is the best orange juice I have ever tasted! Close your eyes and it’s like eating a big juicy orange. The OJ is squeezed fresh daily from Spanish oranges, so you don’t even have to worry about supporting Florida orange growers.
CHICKENS FOR RENTWith American egg prices soaring due to bird flu and some stores imposing purchase limits, the chicken rental business in the U.S. is taking off. Companies like Rent The Chickens let customers keep hens, coops and feed for around $100 a month. Two chickens will lay about a dozen eggs a week. Now, $25 per dozen is more than double what eggs are going for at grocery stores but you have all the fun that comes with being an egg farmer.

PERFECT BOILED EGG
Science to the rescue. Researchers in Italy have figured out how to boil the perfect egg — a velvety and creamy yolk with a soft, solid egg white that’s not too watery. How do you do it? Well, you have to be patient because it’s going to take over half an hour. It uses a completely new technique called periodic cooking. It involves switching an egg eight times between a pan of boiling water and a bowl of cold water. After exactly 32 minutes, the egg is cooled under running water and peeled.
COFFEE CONUNDRUM
Have you ever wondered why some people can’t stand coffee but others can’t get enough of it? It turns out not everyone experiences the bitter compounds in coffee the same way. German researchers at Munich’s Leibniz Institute for Food Systems Biology say it’s all about genetics.

LEFTOVER CHOCOLATE TIP
If you have some leftover chocolate from Valentine’s Day, don’t put it in the fridge. Experts say exposing chocolate to cold temperatures and then warming it up again could cause sugar bloom, a discolouration of the chocolate that might negatively affect its taste, smoothness and texture. If you insist on putting it in the fridge, make sure it’s in an airtight container so it doesn’t absorb surrounding odors and flavours. Ideally, chocolate should be stored in a cool, dry place at room temp. I don’t have to worry about any of this at my place… there’s no such thing as leftover chocolate.
STREAMING TABLE SERVICE
Netflix has opened its own theme restaurant on the Las Vegas strip. Vegas visitors can now stop by Netflix Bites at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino to sample food creations based on the streaming service’s top shows and movies. I wonder if there’s an extra charge for sharing? Here’s some of what’s being served up:
-Bridgerton Regency Tea (3 courses for $65 per person)
-The WWE Smashburger ($23)
-Too Hot to Handle Bloody Mary ($18)
-The Mind Flayer ($24)
-Stranger Wings ($18)
