Chris Sembroski, a member of the Inspiration4 crew that completed the first all-civilian orbital spaceflight, has encountered with young space enthusiasts in western Türkiye's Izmir, sharing his experiences in orbit and encouraging students to pursue careers in science and technology.

On Friday, Sembroski visited Space Camp Türkiye in the Gaziemir district as part of the Galactic Summer Camp. Using photos and videos from the mission, he described life aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon Resilience, the obstacles of living in orbit and the scientific research conducted during the flight.

His interest in space began at a young age. While at university, Sembroski worked as a counselor at Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, where he helped students explore science, technology and engineering.

His path to space was unusual. His college friend Kyle Hippchen won a seat through a charity raffle tied to donations for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, but a medical issue disqualified him from flying, so he gave the seat to Sembroski. He joined Jared Isaacman, Sian Proctor and Hayley Arceneaux on the Inspiration4 crew.

The mission launched on Sept. 15, 2021, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The four-member crew spent about three days in orbit before returning to Earth. The mission also conducted research on the effects of spaceflight on civilian crew members and raised more than $250 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

During the Q&A, students asked Sembroski about space travel, engineering, space technology and career paths.

He urged the students to remain curious and pursue their ambitions, drawing on his own journey from working at a space camp to experiencing spaceflight firsthand.
