Two Down! Lev Goldberg’s History-Making Swim Across Huron Leaves Three Great Lakes

Дата публикации: 13-08-2026 14:46:57

Lev Goldberg has made history — again. After previously becoming the first trans person to swim across Lake Ontario, Goldberg, who is a trans man, has bested another gargantuan feat: swimming across Lake Huron. Goldberg is also the first trans swimmer to accomplish this goal. Goldberg trained for the accomplishment for months and finished the nearly 33-mile journey in 29 hours and 43 minutes on August 5, ending on August 6, without breaks. Goldberg posted about the accomplishment on his Instagram. “A recap of my almost 30 hour long swim across Lake Huron raising money for @lgbtyouthline and becoming the first openly trans swimmer to cross Lake Huron!” Goldberg wrote. “Thank you so much to my crew, I am one very lucky guy.”

In the video, Goldberg detailed some of the obstacles he encountered during his swim, including “four-foot waves with white caps, 20-knot winds and torrential downpour.” Goldberg was accompanied by a boat and two safety observers, per Now Toronto. He was not allowed to rest or take breaks, except to eat every 30 minutes. However, Goldberg had to tread water while he ate.Goldberg said that the physical challenge caused him to have “tons of hallucinations.” “I was obviously awake, but I was experiencing some amount of REM sleep,” he said in his Instagram recap. “I was dreaming that I had my phone and I was texting. Even though we were totally in the dark with nothing around us, I could see a city skyline in the distance that wasn’t there. Very surreal night.” He added that his perception of time was “stretching and contracting” during the swim. He also said that there was a thunderstorm on land and that his safety observers ultimately made the call not to pull him out of the water, but had contemplated it at one point. In comments beneath the video, one person asked Goldberg why he did not wear a wetsuit for the journey and Goldberg clarified the rules. “This is a ratified marathon swim so that is against the rules!” Goldberg said. “Provides warmth and buoyancy so it’s considered performance enhancing. Also the water temp was about 20-22 throughout so very comfortable with no wetsuit.” Goldberg underscored the historic nature of this swim to Now Toronto, sharing that not only is he the first trans person to complete this swim, only seven total people have done so. “I am the fourth person to complete this particular route, and the second man to complete any route, ever,” he added.Goldberg’s swims are part of an ongoing project to swim across all five Great Lakes, a task that is also a fundraiser for LGBT Youthline, an organization supporting LGBTQ+ youth in Ontario, Canada. As of right now, Goldberg has raised over $16,000 CAD, per his GoFundMe page. The funds raised cover the costs of the swim, with the excess donated to the nonprofit.Get the best of what’s queer.
