▪️
в порту Николаев
– три сухогруза;
▪️
в порту Черноморск
– контейнерный терминал с грузами военного назначения, а также склад с беспилотными летательными аппаратами FP-2 и комплектующими к ним;
▪️

Vistula Vanguard 26

Türkiye reportedly restricts Black Sea ship traffic after surge in vessel attacks.

Türkiye is reportedly restricting commercial ship traffic into the Black Sea amid growing concerns in Ankara over a surge in Russian and Ukrainian attacks on civilian vessels, Bloomberg reported Saturday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Türkiye's Directorate General of Coastal Safety has told multiple ships bound for Russia's Novorossiysk, a major oil and grain export hub, that it is not currently issuing transit permits for such voyages or needs additional time to review applications for passage through the Dardanelles, according to Bloomberg.
The people cited by Bloomberg said Turkish authorities had not provided an explanation for the move. They asked not to be identified because the information was not public.
Some vessels have also reportedly been told that the restriction applies to ships heading to Ukraine, according to the report.
The measure appears to effectively limit some commercial vessel traffic entering the Black Sea at a time when attacks on civilian shipping have intensified.
The Directorate General of Coastal Safety referred Bloomberg's questions to Türkiye's Transport and Infrastructure Ministry, which did not respond to requests for comment outside regular business hours, the report said.

Report comes amid attacks on Turkish vessels

The reported restrictions come as another Turkish-flagged vessel, identified as the MV Gulluk, was reportedly struck by a drone off the Russian port of Novorossiysk.
Maritime monitoring account The Maritime Voice reported that a drone struck the vessel's living quarters. Accounts shared with Türkiye Today by people identifying themselves as relatives and colleagues of crew members also said the vessel had been attacked.
No crew members were reported injured or killed, according to The Maritime Voice, which said the Gulluk had since set course for Istanbul.
Neither the Ukrainian nor Russian government has commented specifically on the reported attack on the Gulluk.
The reported incident would be the latest in a series of drone attacks involving Turkish-owned or Turkish-flagged commercial vessels operating in the Black Sea and near Russian ports in recent months.
Türkiye's Directorate General of Maritime Affairs said the Ro-Ro cargo vessel Nadezhda was struck by a drone about 20 nautical miles off Novorossiysk on Aug. 3 while sailing from the Russian port to Samsun.

Three of the vessel's 22 crew members were reported to be in serious condition following the attack. Thirteen of those aboard were Turkish nationals. The crew was later evacuated to Novorossiysk by Russian maritime units.
Türkiye's Foreign Ministry separately said two civilian vessels, the Yasar and the Nadezhda, were attacked after leaving Novorossiysk.
The ministry said it was "deeply concerned about the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine in the Black Sea, which is affecting civilian shipping despite our numerous warnings."
Earlier in the same period, the Turkish-flagged bulk carrier Reyhan Sari was struck by a drone while sailing from Russia's Taman port to Trabzon, killing one crew member and wounding three others.

Ankara calls for Black Sea navigational safety

Following the attacks, Türkiye called on the parties to the Russia-Ukraine war to take steps to protect civilian shipping.
"We reiterate our call to all relevant actors, especially the warring parties, to urgently implement concrete measures to ensure navigational safety in the Black Sea," the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday, according to Bloomberg.
The ministry warned that further escalation could have "multifaceted negative consequences," including for food security.
Ukraine has targeted Russian-flagged vessels and Russia-linked shipping in the Black Sea during the war, accusing Moscow of using maritime routes to transport sanctioned goods. Russia has separately struck Ukrainian port infrastructure and vessels in attacks Kyiv has described as war crimes.
The growing risks to commercial shipping have also raised concerns about Black Sea grain supplies. Bloomberg reported that those concerns helped push wheat prices to a two-year high in July.
The reported Turkish restrictions could add another complication to global trade as oil flows are already being disrupted by the war involving Iran and reduced volumes moving through the Strait of Hormuz.
The restrictions do not appear to amount to a complete halt in northbound commercial traffic. Vessels heading to Bulgarian and Turkish ports continued to sail north through the Dardanelles as of 1 p.m. Saturday, according to ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg.

Another Turkish vessel reportedly attacked in Black Sea.

A Turkish-flagged vessel, identified as the MV Gulluk, was reportedly struck by a drone off the Russian port of Novorossiysk, according to maritime monitoring account The Maritime Voice and accounts shared with Türkiye Today by people identifying themselves as relatives and colleagues of crew members.
According to The Maritime Voice, the drone struck the ship's living quarters.
The account said no crew members were reported injured or killed in the attack, and that the Gulluk had since set course for Istanbul.
The Maritime Voice described the incident as part of a continuing pattern of attacks on Turkish-flagged vessels in the Black Sea.
Separately, people identifying themselves as relatives and colleagues of crew members shared accounts with Türkiye Today describing the moments after the reported strike.
One person said their father was aboard the ship and that contact had been lost after he reported the vessel had been hit. "We're currently unable to reach my father on the ship. He said the ship was hit, then the line cut off. I've since spoken with him, the ship immediately set off toward Istanbul. They're heading back; no one on board was harmed," the person said.
A second person, describing themselves as a friend of a crew member aboard the Gulluk, said: "News came from my friend who works on the Gulluk. It was hit. It will be towed to the shipyard. No deaths."
Publicly available vessel-registry information cited alongside the reports identifies the Gulluk as a bulk carrier built in 2002, sailing under the Turkish flag, with IMO number 9228100 and MMSI number 271044383.

Wider pattern of attacks on Turkish ships

The reported strike on the Gulluk would be the latest in a series of drone attacks on Turkish-owned or Turkish-flagged commercial vessels transiting the Black Sea and Russian ports in recent months.
Türkiye's Directorate General of Maritime Affairs said a Ro-Ro cargo ship, the Nadezhda, was struck by a drone about 20 nautical miles off Novorossiysk on Aug. 3 while sailing from Novorossiysk to Samsun, with three of its 22 crew members, 13 of them Turkish nationals, reported to be in serious condition before all were evacuated to Novorossiysk by Russian maritime units.
Türkiye's Foreign Ministry separately said two civilian vessels, the Yasar and the Nadezhda, were attacked after leaving Novorossiysk, and that it was "deeply concerned about the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine in the Black Sea, which is affecting civilian shipping despite our numerous warnings."
Earlier in the same period, the Turkish-flagged bulk carrier Reyhan Sari was struck by a drone while sailing from Russia's Taman port to Trabzon, killing one crew member and wounding three others.
Ukraine has targeted Russian-flagged vessels and Russia-linked shipping in the Black Sea throughout the war, accusing Moscow of using the waterway to transport sanctioned goods, while Russia has separately struck Ukrainian port infrastructure and vessels, attacks Kyiv has described as war crimes.
Neither the Ukrainian nor Russian government has commented on the reported attack on the Gulluk specifically.

Serbia opens the door to Zelenskyy, but not away from Russia.

This article was originally written for Türkiye Todays bi-weekly Balkans newsletter, BalkanLine, in its August 7, 2026 issue. Please make sure you are subscribed to the newsletter by clicking here.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will arrive in Belgrade on Saturday for his first visit to Serbia since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and his first since becoming president in 2019.
The symbolism is hard to miss.
"We need to pull the Serbs away from Russias side," a senior Ukrainian official told international media, describing Zelenskyys visit to Moscows traditional Balkan ally as a "slap in the face for the Russians."
That may be the ambition in Kyiv. But pulling Serbia away from Russia is, of course, much easier said than done.
Belgrade has spent years trying to keep one foot in Moscow and the other in the West. Serbia has refused to join sanctions against Russia, maintained close energy ties with Moscow and continued high-level political contacts with the Kremlin.
At the same time, Serbia still says its future is in the European Union, even as Brussels continues to criticize Belgrade for refusing to align its foreign policy with the bloc.
And this is where Saturdays visit becomes interesting.
Zelenskyys arrival does not mean Serbia is suddenly moving away from Russia. I would be very careful about reading it that way. If anything, the visit shows just how determined Belgrade remains to keep both relationships alive, even as doing so becomes more complicated.

The energy reality
Energy gives us a pretty good example of why.
Serbias Russian-majority-owned oil company NIS received another temporary U.S. sanctions waiver this week, allowing it to continue importing crude and operating its Pancevo refinery until Aug. 28. Washington also extended the deadline for the sale of the Russian stake in the company until the same date, as negotiations with Hungarian energy group MOL continue.
This is not a minor issue for Serbia. NIS supplies around 80% of the countrys fuel market. Gazprom Neft owns 45% of the company, while another Gazprom-linked entity holds 11.3%. The Serbian state owns nearly 30%.
So when we talk about Serbias relationship with Russia, we are not only talking about history, political sympathy or the occasional meeting with Putin. There are very practical interests tied up in it as well.

Keeping Kyiv close
Still, Belgrade has been careful not to shut the door on Kyiv.
In July, Vucic traveled to Kyiv alongside other regional leaders for the fifth Ukraine-Southeast Europe Summit. Afterward, he said he was not entirely satisfied with the level of assistance Serbia had provided to Ukraine.
However, Vucic was the only participant who declined to sign the summits joint declaration, which called for continued political, military, financial and security support for Ukraine, as well as increased pressure on Russia.

Belgrade's balancing act endures
Three weeks later, Zelenskyy is making the return trip.
He will arrive in Serbia while still trying to reconcile Serbia's relationship with Russia, which Belgrade clearly does not want to abandon, alongside its official European path and increasingly visible ties with Ukraine.
Vucics office has confirmed what it described as an "official visit" by Zelenskyy. But Vucic himself has already made clear that nobody should read too much into it. Asked whether the visit could signal Serbia joining sanctions against Russia, he said Belgrade had established its policy nearly five years ago and that it would remain in place "until further notice."

The Turkish-flagged dry cargo ship "MV Reyhan Sari," which was attacked by a drone off Novorossiysk while transporting coal, arrives at Trabzon Port on July 23, 2026. (IHA Photo)

The owner of the Turkish-flagged cargo ship Reyhan Sari and 15 crew members are preparing to file a complaint against Ukraine with the International Criminal Court (ICC), alleging the vessel was deliberately targeted in a Black Sea attack that killed a Turkish sailor.
The legal move follows the July 22 attack on the vessel, which was sailing from Russia's Port of Taman to Trabzon with a cargo of coal when it was struck by a drone off Novorossiysk. One Turkish crew member was killed and several others were injured.

Ship owner moves case to The Hague
The application, obtained by Turkish maritime news outlet haberdenizde.com, is being submitted on behalf of T and O Denizcilik, the ship's owner.
According to the application, civilian merchant ships are protected under international humanitarian law during wartime and cannot be considered military targets.
The filing argues that Ukraine deliberately struck the Turkish-flagged vessel, specifically targeting its accommodation area with the intent to kill civilians. It further alleges that the attack constitutes crimes against humanity and claims explosives containing cluster munitions with armor-piercing capabilities were used.
The complaint is expected to be submitted to the ICC in The Hague on behalf of the Turkish side.

ICC filing follows deadly strike

Reyhan Sari was purchased by T and O Maritime in 2023 before being registered under the Turkish flag during an official ceremony and entered into the Turkish International Ship Registry, according to the application.
Ukrainian military authorities announced strikes on 13 vessels in the Black and Azov seas on the day of the incident, saying they targeted ships supporting Russia's military logistics and energy exports, but they did not identify Reyhan Sari as one of them.
Following the attack, the damaged vessel continued under its own power and later reached the Turkish port of Trabzon.

Ukraine denies targeting Bulgaria after drone blast, ambassador summoned.

Ukraine denied on Saturday that it had deliberately targeted Bulgaria after a drone exploded near the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline close to the Romanian border, prompting Sofia to summon Ukraine's ambassador for talks.
Bulgaria's Defense Ministry identified the drone as a type "widely used by the Ukrainian military" after examining the wreckage. Even so, the ministry concluded that nothing currently indicates the incident was intentional. The country's foreign minister called in Ukraine's ambassador for a meeting on Monday.
"We are in close contact with the Bulgarian side to clarify the circumstances. We can say with certainty that the Ukrainian Armed Forces did not intentionally direct any assets toward Bulgaria," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Georgiy Tykhyi said, blaming Russia's invasion for the incident.

Drone explodes near key gas infrastructure

The drone exploded near the Kardam border crossing with Romania, around 1,000 meters from a compressor station serving the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced after an emergency meeting of the Security Council. No casualties or damage to infrastructure were reported.
The Trans-Balkan pipeline is one of southeastern Europe's key natural gas corridors, stretching from Türkiye through Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova to Ukraine. Built during the Soviet era, it originally carried Russian gas south via Ukraine to the Balkans and Türkiye.
Since Russia shifted most exports to the TurkStream pipeline in 2020, the route has increasingly been adapted for reverse flows, allowing gas from Greece, Türkiye and other sources to move north toward Moldova and Ukraine.
According to Radev, the drone entered Bulgarian airspace from Romania before crashing into a sunflower field. Border police first heard the aircraft and later observed a powerful explosion followed by black smoke.
He noted that the drone had been carrying a significant amount of explosives and that neither Bulgarian nor Romanian air defense systems detected it before the blast.

Bulgaria strengthens border monitoring

Following the incident, Bulgaria stepped up surveillance along its borders and plans to redeploy troops while expanding anti-drone measures, Radev announced.
Drone incursions have become increasingly common across NATO's eastern flank since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Bulgaria, Romania and Türkiye all border the Black Sea, where both Russian and Ukrainian forces regularly use drones.
Earlier this week, Turkish officials reported that a drone attack on two civilian vessels in the Black Sea had injured crew members, while Ankara voiced concern over the escalating conflict in the region.

Türkiye seeks US approval to transfer MLRS, ATACMS missiles to Ukraine.

The U.S. State Department has notified Congress of a proposed permanent transfer of Turkish-held U.S.-made weapons systems to Ukraine, including 12 M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) launchers and 70 M39 ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles, according to documents printed in the Congressional Record on Aug. 6.
Because the equipment is of U.S. origin, its transfer from Türkiye's inventory to Ukraine requires U.S. government authorization and congressional notification under Section 3(d) of the Arms Export Control Act, a process commonly referred to as third-party transfer or re-export authorization.

What the congressional record shows
Sen. Jim Risch, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, entered two separate arms transfer notifications into the Congressional Record on Aug. 6, noting that Section 36(b) of the Arms Export Control Act requires Congress to receive prior notice of certain proposed arms sales, with a 30-calendar-day review period.
The first notification, numbered RSAT case 26-11496 by the State Department, covers the transfer of 12 M270 MLRS launchers, 2,524 M26 unguided Dual-Purpose Improved Conventional Munitions (DPICM) rockets and 47,000 M509A1 203mm DPICM howitzer rounds, with an original acquisition value of approximately $255.9 million, according to the transmittal sheet.
The second notification covers 70 M39 ATACMS missiles, with an original acquisition value of approximately $28 million, according to the transmittal sheet.

Who's involved in the transfer
Both notifications list the Government of Türkiye as the country proposing the transfer and the Government of Ukraine as the recipient.
The MLRS, DPICM rocket and howitzer round transfer would proceed via Turkish private entities MKE A.S., ASFAT A.S. and ARCA Savunma San. Tic. A.S.; Bulgarian private entity VTIC International Ltd.; and U.S. private entities Pansophico and Patriot Defense Group, according to the notification.
The ATACMS missile transfer would proceed via Turkish private entity MKE A.S. and U.S. private entities Pansophico and Patriot Defense Group, the notification states.
"Türkiye seeks to reduce its inventory of older defense articles to focus its financial resources on modernization and sustainment of existing systems," both notifications state.
"Ukraine seeks to acquire these systems to bolster its offensive and defense fire support capabilities as it resists the Russian invasion. Ukraine already possesses munitions of the same or essentially similar type," the notification says.
Both notifications say the transfer is proposed to be made "immediately after the congressional notification period is complete" and list Aug. 3, 2026, as the date the notification was delivered to Congress.
The U.S. government "is prepared to authorize this transfer, having taken into account political, military, economic, human rights, and arms control considerations," according to the congressional notification transmittal sheets, both signed by Christopher Bergaust, senior bureau official in the State Department's Bureau of Legislative Affairs.
The sheets state the transfers are "consistent with U.S. security assistance objectives" and were routed to the Speaker of the House, the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
The ATACMS is a short-range tactical ballistic missile system capable of striking targets well beyond the front line, making it a more offensively oriented weapon than air-defense or artillery systems Türkiye has previously supplied to third countries.
Turkish defense analyst Arda Mevlutoglu commented on the development on X.

"If Türkiye is preparing to hand Ukraine an offensive weapons system, especially a tactical ballistic missile like ATACMS, then 'something' has changed considerably," he wrote.

Russia denies it was behind bomb drone attack on German airport foiled by hero bus driver as fears grow that Putin could launch new Nato assault.

Russia has denied being involved in a suspected drone attack at a major German air freight hub this week.
The Russian embassy in Berlin called the drone incident a 'fabricated provocation', saying it was another example of accusations against Russia without evidence.
'The embassy is expressing its concern about a new wave of anti-Russian hysteria in Germany,' said a statement published on its website on Friday.
The Russian embassy's comments come after German federal prosecutors launched a probe this week into what they described as a serious attack that could have impacted foreign and domestic security.
Airport workers discovered the drone late on Tuesday at Leipzig/Halle airport, an important civilian freight and NATO logistics hub in eastern Germany that is also a base for several giant An-124 cargo planes operated by Ukraine's Antonov Airlines.
The drone was equipped with explosives and a detonator, according to prosecutors.
The suspected drone attack was foiled by a hero bus driver at the airport after he kicked it out of the air, according to German MP Detlef Seif.
The bus driver at Leipzig/Halle Airport saw the drone flying low close to a Ukrainian cargo plane when he halted it.

Police officers work in the vicinity of an Antonov cargo plane, near which a drone was found, at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Schkeuditz, Germany, August 5, 2026

'A bus driver kicked the drone away while it was flying low. It then crashed and came to rest on the ground,' Mr Seif said.
'The bus driver's action was very daring and courageous, but also very dangerous. It is possible that his intervention prevented the intended attack.'
Additionally, a cargo plane that performed a go-around due to a runway closure near the airport collided with an object that prosecutors believe was another drone.
The jet, operated by logistics group DHL, sustained slight damage and was eventually diverted to Hanover in northern Germany.
German government members and other officials have not blamed any foreign countries publicly for the incident, but some lawmakers have pointed the finger at Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion in Ukraine in 2022.
'It is obvious that this hastily fabricated provocation only serves the interests of Kyiv and the militarist wing of the European political class,' the Russian embassy said in its statement.
In the past, German officials have often blamed Moscow for what they call hybrid attacks incidents of aggression that fall short of acts of war.

Russia could send an armed group to occupy NATO territory within weeks, US intelligence has warned

It comes amid warnings from US intelligence services that Russia could send an armed group to occupy NATO territory in Europe.
Officials believe that Putin could launch a small land incursion into a disputed Eastern European outpost such as the Estonian city of Narva, or launch a cyber attack to test the alliance's resolve.
Until now, US intelligence believed the Kremlin dictator would not risk provoking NATO while fighting in Ukraine.
But this assessment changed this year as Russia comes under increasing pressure from Ukrainian drone attacks on oil refineries and logistics hubs, according to The Wall Street Journal.
NATO members believe Putin is already conducting probing attacks to test and fracture the alliance.
Western fighter jets have been scrambled three times in the last few weeks to shoot down drones, while Ukraine recently intercepted a drone that had earlier crossed into Romanian airspace.
And fighter jets were scrambled over 250 per cent more in July compared with a year ago as Russia continues to probe the West's defences.
The sharp increase in the monthly figure for July compared with the same month in 2025 highlights Putin's aggressive stance.

'The numbers do not lie,' said a post by NATO's Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum.
'The possible threats range from a cyberattack on a NATO country or sending unmarked armed groups to occupy territory to a limited incursion on the alliance's eastern flank,' said the WSJ report.
The time frame for a Russian move is between this autumn and 2029, according to US intelligence assessments.
One theory is Putin could grab a city or region in Poland or one of the three Baltic states - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, all NATO members which have strongly backed Ukraine.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda warned recently: 'I cannot deny that we have such information and that it concerns kinetic operations.
'Not on a large scale, but targeted kinetic operations that are very likely to be directed against critical infrastructure.'
Russian opposition politician and chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov said: 'I think the chances [are] that he'll cross NATO borders Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, just a small incursion using drones.
'I think the chances are growing because Putin needs a winning narrative and Ukraine doesn't offer it.'
All three Baltic states have strengthened their border defences against Russia and close ally Belarus.
The Baltic states have some of the highest defence spending in all of NATO in relative terms - Lithuania directs 5.3 per cent of GDP to defence, the most of NATO's 32 members.

Last month, Washington warned the Kremlin could be planning an armed incursion on Polish land to test NATO's response.
The provocation could see Putin's troops cross over into Poland, and vital infrastructure could be targeted by missiles and drones.
Sources close to Polish President Karol Nawrocki told news outlet Onet that the US had been warning Warsaw about the plan for a while.
Russia's plan aims to start a crisis to scare Western nations into stopping their support for Ukraine.
Polish security experts also warned that Russia and Belarus might send a small number of troops across the NATO border.
Power stations could also be targeted in the incursion, through air strikes that would force Poland to activate its air defence systems.
Moscow's strategy relies on the assumption that the US would compel Poland to negotiate rather than engage militarily.
It also comes as four people, including a child, were killed in Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and the surrounding region, local officials said on Saturday.
Residents endure regular drone and missile barrages that Kyiv's depleted air defences are struggling to counter amid Moscow's 4-year-old full-scale invasion, while repeated Ukrainian strikes on oil facilities have caused fuel shortages and rattled Russians.
Two grandparents and their 3-year-old grandson were killed after multiple Russian drones destroyed their home in the Brovary district of Kyiv region, northeast of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, early Saturday.
Three other members of the same family and a neighbour who came to their aid were hospitalised, local authorities said.
The attack reduced the house to rubble and wrecked outbuildings and cars.

In the city of Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at least one other person died in a 'strike involving six ballistic missiles against civilian infrastructure.'
In its daily report, Ukraine's air force said it had downed or intercepted 135 of 151 drones launched by Russia overnight. The attack also involved six ballistic missiles and other guided missiles.
Russia has relentlessly pounded civilian areas of Ukraine, even though Moscow insists its forces target only military facilities.
Moscow is exploiting Ukraine's critical shortage of interceptors for the U.S.-made Patriot systems, the sole air defence weapon in its arsenal able to shoot down ballistic missiles.
Zelenskyy has pleaded with other countries, especially the U.S., to send more of the ammunition made scarcer by the Iran war.
Failing that, he wants to make Patriot ammunition in Ukraine or win permission from Elon Musk to use his Starlink satellite communications system to guide strikes inside Russia that can hit its missile launchers.
Following the latest attacks, Zelenskyy appealed on X for more sanctions to 'prevent the production of these ballistic missiles,' along with 'anti-ballistic capabilities' and 'interceptor missiles.'
Ukraines air defences shot down around 5,300 drones and missiles last month, Ukraines defence ministry said Friday, just under 60 per cent of the around 9,000 attack drones and missiles Russia fired in the same period.

Censorship. Lies. Distrust. New history reveals how propagandists, Churchill and the press failed to convince the public of Britain's military might and instead left the country in a dystopian world of misinformation.

The paradox of the Second World War is that to spend more than five years defending freedom and crushing the Nazis, we resorted to draconian measures fighting a war for democracy, while threatening to silence dissent, as we read in this book.
Morale was a constant concern. To keep the populace buoyant, and to avoid blind panic and despair, the government insisted on withholding grim statistics. The actual horrors were suppressed, surrounded in great secrecy.
Dunkirk, for example, was not reported as a humiliating retreat. It was instead a miracle of deliverance, achieved by valour, perfect discipline, and faultless service. Churchills fight-them-on-the-beaches rhetoric rubbed in this heroic, steadfast interpretation of what was virtually the Armys annihilation.
All this sort of thing was masterminded by the Ministry of Information, the headquarters of the propaganda industry, which became the Ministry of Truth in Orwells Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Safety first: little girl fits her doll with a gas mask in 1938

If that sounds sinister, its worth remembering that at the time, on the BBC, in radio comedies with 16 million listeners, such as Its That Man Again, officialdom and bureaucracy was affectionately mocked as the Ministry of Aggravation and Mysteries, inhabited by characters called Sir Short Supply and Colonel Chinstrap.
Youd not have found any equivalents in Nazi Germany anyone deviating from strict militaristic ideals ran the risk of torture by the Gestapo, says Steven Casey.
Yet laughter, the lampooning of bland-faced establishment figures and public officers, and the satirising of our institutions, was crucial to morale. Posters and leaflets told people to Keep a Cheerful British Smile on Your Face, to Keep Calm and Carry On.
The schemes worked. Pots and pans, even egg whisks, were collected to be melted down for Spitfires and Hurricanes, as if for a jolly jape.
Chamberlain may have been flying back and forth to Munich for chats with the fuhrer, but the mood at home was belligerent, with little support for appeasement. The public was in favour of conscription. The Home Guard, or Dads Army, an increasingly efficient military force, received half a million volunteers.

Looks can be deceiving: A female member of Air Raid Precautions staff applies her lipstick between emergency calls, circa 1940

A full year before the actual declaration of war, people were fitted for gas masks. Anti-aircraft and coastal defence units were mobilised, as was the fleet. The RAF cancelled leave. Trenches were dug in parks. Plans were made for children to be evacuated.
Once hostilities began, to continue this idea of an Ealing Comedy England, reports were vague and misleading. Names of casualties, and the precise numbers of those killed, were not to be divulged. The BBC played records rather than tell the public that 5,730 people had been killed in the first three weeks of the Blitz. The result was a sanitised view of the Blitz that did little to impress those who had personally witnessed the grim reality.
By September 1941, 43,675 civilians and 48,973 men in uniform had been killed. When 503 tons of bombs fell on Coventry, a cordon of soldiers was placed ten miles around the city to stop reporters.
Newsreel footage was censored. Photographing air-raid damage was not allowed this despite, on the Clyde, 35,000 of the 47,000 inhabitants now being homeless.
The Ministry of Information, on Churchills orders, did not wish the public to know distressing details. News on damage to British ships was forbidden, as were reports of the German U-boats success in disrupting our food supplies. We were not to know about the torpedoing of aircraft carriers. Official briefings were relentlessly upbeat. Meanwhile, Luftwaffe losses were massively exaggerated.
When Paris was to be occupied, people were in complete ignorance of the situation, i.e. that Britain might be invaded next.
It was altogether patronising and condescending, the way the Establishment and those in authority assumed the general public was quite unprepared for the shock of realisation of the true position.

110499715-16036655-image-a-48_1786111683699.jpg

Posters were a crucial edition to wartime propaganda

The Holocaust went unreported, on the grounds that stories of the atrocities came from sources that could not immediately be verified. Rumours of concentration camps were officially dismissed as exaggerated, if not fabricated.
It took Richard Dimbleby to break down in tears as he began speaking into a BBC microphone in Belsen to wake everybody up: I picked my way over corpse after corpse in the gloom.
But still in cinemas or in the newspapers, we had tales of the bombed Swansea, which has its chin up and is able to take it. Taking a direct hit was another excuse for bouncing back: In the kitchen, among the debris, wives contrived to cook their husbands meals.
The reality of being a Land Girl was never like the sunny images on the recruiting posters. Rationing meant genuine hardship, but the Dig For Victory campaign made it seem everybody was merrily harvesting their own spuds and carrots and the number of allotments did go from 815,000 in 1939 to 1,400,000 by 1943.

110499719-16036655-image-a-50_1786111713691.jpg
Homegrown: The number of allotments did go from 815,000 in 1939 to 1,400,000 by 1943

I misread the title of this book as The Septic Isle, and whilst I knew the reference was to Shakespeares sceptred isle, I thought it was going to be a book about infections. And in a sense, it is: the contamination of truth, the inflammation of the body politic when all aspects of existence are subjected to complete censorship.
But it is important to note that the governments propaganda and censorship operation was in the interests of our war effort.
Steven Casey has produced a brilliant and richly detailed study, deeply thought-provoking, of how narratives of the war were shaped and presented; how the public was psychologically manipulated, massaged and fooled.

Türkiye calls for Black Sea moratorium as attacks hit Turkish-linked vessels.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Saturday called for a moratorium on attacks by Russia and Ukraine in the Black Sea after a series of strikes on civilian ships, including Turkish-linked vessels.
Fidan called for "the setting up of a mechanism allowing a moratorium to be declared" in an interview with Turkish news agency Anadolu.
"The conflict has spread across the whole Black Sea," he said.
"To begin with, they targeted the ports and the military ships. Now, they are attacking all commercial shipping without distinction," Fidan added.
He said ships belonging to Türkiye or flying the Turkish flag were among those targeted.
Türkiye had already denounced Black Sea drone attacks on two Turkish civilian vessels earlier in the week, in which some crew members were injured.

Turkish-linked vessels affected

Fidan said Türkiye's warnings about attacks affecting Turkish vessels in the Black Sea were "unfortunately" proving correct.
He said the entire Black Sea had increasingly become an area affected by the war.
"At first, they were hitting military ports and military vessels; now they are hitting all commercial vessels without distinction," Fidan said.
"Unfortunately, Turkish vessels, Turkish-owned or Turkish-flagged vessels, are also being affected," he added.
Fidan said foreign-flagged vessels owned by Turkish companies could also be targeted, as could foreign-owned and foreign-flagged vessels carrying Turkish crew members.
He said Türkiye was closely monitoring all such vessels.
Although Turkish vessels make up a relatively smaller proportion of the ships being targeted, Fidan said the situation nevertheless caused concern in Ankara.
He said Türkiye had presented several measures to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and was implementing them.
Fidan said Türkiye had urged both sides to establish a mechanism for a moratorium on attacks, noting that Ukraine had already made a request and that Ankara conveyed it to Russian counterparts.
He warned that both sides were targeting logistics facilities important to each other and described the situation as highly dangerous.

Turkish vessels hit near Novorossiysk
The remarks came after a Turkish-flagged vessel, identified as the MV Gulluk, was reportedly struck by a drone off the Russian port of Novorossiysk, according to maritime monitoring account The Maritime Voice and accounts shared with Türkiye Today by people identifying themselves as relatives and colleagues of crew members.
The reported strike on the Gulluk would be the latest in a series of drone attacks on Turkish-owned or Turkish-flagged commercial vessels transiting the Black Sea and Russian ports in recent months.
Türkiye's Directorate General of Maritime Affairs said the Ro-Ro cargo ship Nadezhda was struck by a drone about 20 nautical miles off Novorossiysk on Aug. 3 while sailing from Novorossiysk to Samsun.
The directorate said three of the vessel's 22 crew members, 13 of them Turkish nationals, were reported to be in serious condition before all were evacuated to Novorossiysk by Russian maritime units.
Neither the Ukrainian nor Russian government has commented on the reported attack on the Gulluk specifically.

Attacks raise grain security concerns

Ukraine has targeted Russian-flagged vessels and Russia-linked shipping in the Black Sea throughout the war, accusing Moscow of using the waterway to transport sanctioned goods.
Russia has separately struck Ukrainian port infrastructure and vessels, attacks Kyiv has described as war crimes.
Intensifying attacks on ports, grain terminals and commercial ships in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov are also disrupting Russian and Ukrainian grain shipments, fueling concerns over global food security.
Russia is the world's largest wheat exporter, while Ukraine is known as Europe's breadbasket.
Ukraine's grain and oilseed production is expected to rise from 80 million metric tons last year to 81 million this year, with agricultural products making up around 60% of its total exports.
The United Nations (U.N.) said global agricultural markets are beginning to feel the effects of the attacks, calling for efforts to prevent tensions from escalating.
The U.N. World Food Programme warned that Ukrainian grain shipments could be further disrupted if attacks on shipping routes continue, deepening global food insecurity.

Ukrainian ports see traffic disruption

Some 35 attacks were carried out against ships in ports, 22 against ships at sea and 67 on port facilities last month, according to Ukraine's Infrastructure Ministry.
Ships in Ukrainian ports were targeted a total of 14 times last year, the ministry said.
Russia's escalating attacks on ports and surrounding infrastructure in the Odesa region are affecting the main route used for Ukrainian agricultural exports, more than 90% of which are shipped through ports in Odesa and the surrounding area.
Ports in Odesa, Chornomorsk and Yuzhny have seen commercial traffic largely come to a halt since the second half of July as security risks increased.
Taras Vysotskyi, Ukraine's agricultural policy and food minister, said shipowners had temporarily suspended sending vessels to the country's Black Sea ports to load agricultural products as of July 22.
He said alternative export routes would not reach full capacity until the end of August.
Vysotskyi said land and river routes, even at full capacity, would not be able to handle half the volume of shipments normally carried through Black Sea ports.
Danish shipper Maersk temporarily suspended its feeder service through Chornomorsk port and is rerouting cargo to Romania's Constanta port. Existing export bookings may be canceled or the loading port may be changed to Constanta.

Russia, Ukraine trade accusations

The Russian Defense Ministry says the targets it struck in attacks on Ukrainian ports and ships were used for military purposes.
Kyiv says a significant portion of the targeted facilities and vessels were used for civilian trade and agricultural exports.
Ukraine has also intensified drone attacks on Russian ports, grain terminals and commercial vessels along the Black Sea and Sea of Azov coasts.
Russia's major grain export terminals at Taman port were reportedly attacked, while some terminals along the Black Sea coast have limited grain intake by land transport because of security risks.
Operations at the Port of Taman were affected by restrictions on ship movements in the Sea of Azov introduced on July 10.
Grain shipments continue from the ports of Novorossiysk and Tuapse, but loading speeds have slowed because of security measures and restrictions.
The nonprofit Rusgrain Union warned that attacks on commercial vessels and port infrastructure threaten Black Sea shipping and that export corridors could close if conditions persist.
Both Moscow and Kyiv deny accusations of targeting civilian ships and port infrastructure, saying they are striking targets linked to military activity.

Grain corridor uncertainty grows

The Black Sea Grain Initiative was signed in Istanbul in July 2022 by Türkiye, Russia, Ukraine and the U.N. to prevent a potential global food crisis.
While the Black Sea grain corridor was open, more than 1,000 ships delivered around 33 million metric tons of grain to global markets and for humanitarian purposes.
The corridor facilitated Ukrainian grain shipments to global markets and helped ease global food price pressures.
After Russia withdrew from the deal in July 2023, Ukraine established an alternative maritime corridor along the western coast of the Black Sea, close to the territorial waters of Romania and Bulgaria.
However, intensifying attacks on ports, vessels and grain terminals have raised uncertainty over the route's operation and the delivery of this year's harvest, while some shippers have suspended operations.
If tensions in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov continue, grain shipment disruptions could affect prices and lead to supply pressures, especially in African and Middle Eastern countries that rely on imports from the region.

Turkish commandos destroy unmanned surface vessel found off Black Sea coast.

An unmanned surface vessel detected off the coast of Hopa district in Türkiye's northeastern Artvin province was towed to open sea and destroyed in a controlled manner by Underwater Defense (SAS) commandos, officials said Sunday.
Artvin Governor Turan Ergun said the operation had been completed safely.
"As we planned last night, our SAS commandos moved to our district in the morning," Ergun said after the operation.
"They carried out their necessary work and examinations. The vehicle in question was towed to a safe distance in open sea and destroyed. The problem has been resolved," he added.
The vehicle had been detected Saturday off the coast of Hopa and was assessed to be an unmanned surface vessel.

Security measures taken after report
Officials said a report was received at 4:35 p.m. Saturday that a suspicious object had been found near the Sugoren Fishermen's Shelter.
Maritime police carried out underwater imaging of the object and sent photographs to SAS commando teams.
Following assessments, security measures were taken in the area because of the possibility that the vessel could be carrying explosives.
Ergun said authorities acted according to the worst-case scenario because similar incidents had occurred before in the Black Sea, including off Hopa.
"Our SAS commandos focused on the possibility that this could be an unmanned surface vehicle," Ergun said.
"Upon this, because we have experienced examples of this before, and you know this happens from time to time in the Black Sea. In fact, it had happened off Hopa again before," he added.
He said officials took precautions against possible damage, particularly because diesel and gasoline fuels are present at Hopa Port.

Object approached 50 meters from shore
Ergun said the object had approached as close as 50 meters to the shore because of wind, prompting authorities to temporarily close a nearby highway to traffic.
He said the road was later reopened in a controlled manner after the object moved about 400 meters offshore.
"Our Coast Guard Station Command is also monitoring it from the sea at a certain distance," he said.
Ergun said a 600-meter net had also been stretched in the area as part of the precautions.
He said SAS commandos were expected to arrive by military aircraft because detonation was a technical matter under their authority.
"There is no cause for concern at this stage," Ergun said before the operation.
"We are already following the situation from here. God willing, as I said, tomorrow we will completely destroy this object by detonating it," he added.

Governor says no evacuation needed
Ergun said there was no evacuation of homes and urged residents not to panic.
"We always take precautions by considering the worst-case scenario," he said.
"I want to state that there is no situation that should cause panic or curiosity among our citizens. There is currently no evacuation of homes," he added.
He said the road could be closed again if needed under the most negative scenario.
SAS teams affiliated with the Naval Forces Command later examined the object and, after completing assessments, towed it to a safe distance in open sea.
The vessel was then destroyed in a controlled manner after security measures were taken in the surrounding area.
Teams carried out an examination in the area after the destruction process was completed.
