John Barrowman has been rushed to hospital after suffering appendicitis.

The Doctor Who star underwent emergency surgery at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California, on Tuesday after collapsing in 'agony'.

The 50-year-old actor had fallen ill at his home earlier this week and was later told by doctors that he would need to have his appendix removed immediately.

Keeping fans up-to-date on his condition, John later shared a video of himself on Instagram, which detailed his 6am wake up call ahead of surgery.

'I am out of surgery. Feel like I have been hit by a bus. Jb,' he captioned the clip.

In the short video, the TV presenter divulged: 'I feel a bit like I've been hit by a car and I'm just sore all over. 

'My throat is sore because of the tube. I'm just sore all over.' 

The Torchwood star also shared a picture of himself reclined on his hospital bed, his feet donning a pair of TARDIS socks.

'Got my fan made #TARDIS socks on keeping my feet warm in the hospital,' he captioned the snap.

Of course, fans of the star will know that the novelty socks do not mark the first bit of TARDIS clothing the actor has sported recently.

Entertaining the audiences at the San Diego Comic Con last week, John performed a rendition of Copacabana in a sparkly TARDIS dress.

Reading the lyrics of the Barry Manilow hit from his phone, the actor danced around the stage without a care in the world. 

The performance even saw John show off his improvisation skills after the actor awkwardly forgot the words.

Proving the show must go on, he belted: 'His name was Rico, he wore a diamond. I have lost my place in the words, just roll with me on this here.' 

Last year, the actor dressed up as Futurama's Zapp Brannigan at the event, though he put his own spin on the look by pairing it with a tutu and high heels.
