Every year since 1999 Anne and I have taken one road trip to a different part of the United States and seen attractions, wonders, and events we didn’t have back home. From 1999 to 2003 we did so as best friends; from 2004 to the present, as husband and wife. After years of contenting ourselves with everyday life in Indianapolis and any nearby places that also had comics and toy shops, we overcame some of our self-imposed limitations and resolved as a team to leave the comforts of home for annual chances to see creative, exciting, breathtaking, outlandish, historical, and/or bewildering new sights in states beyond our own. We’re the Goldens. This is who we are and what we do…

…and it all comes down to this, at long long last, per our tradition for every MCC road trip story: one final collection of alternate scenes, extra details, and surplus attractions along the way to Charleston, South Carolina, and back again that were squeezed out of the main narrative. Over half are from that particular destination simply because the city was so photogenic that we just kept clicking and clicking. Enjoy!

Anne in hat, smiling while boating through Charleston harbor selfie!

Anne takes way more selfies than I do…

me on a boat wearing a light rain jacket. The white Fort Sumter Ferry Tours flag flies above me.

…and she definitely takes more pics of me than I do.

Tall mechanical construct sticking out of ocean water.

A construct sticking out of Charleston Harbor. Buoy? Submarine? Power station? Cell phone tower? Alien detector?

Battered 1861-era American flag in a display case.

A Fort Sumter battle flag that was knocked over on the second day of the Civil War.

A window planter on historic Rainbow Row.

Snack shop sidewalk sign mocking Starbucks: "A fictional green mermaid logo doesn't make burnt coffee better!"

DAY FOUR: Downtown Charleston‘s own King Street Cookies dissing their corporate coffee-shop competition.

Baked bean welcome center wall art has a pic of Peyton Manning in a red apron doing a contest.

DAY SIX: That time former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning did a corporate synergy thing with Bush’s Baked Beans, as touted at their Tennessee welcome center.

Long view of forests and mountains in a haze before it started raining.

Those same Smokies and the multiple horizons viewable from on high with considerable effort. It’s also a travel metaphor!

…and then we went home, topped off the Camry’s gas tank and returned it to the rental agency the next day.

TOTAL ROAD TRIP MILEAGE AS OF GAS STOP #6: 1,752.4.

The End. Thanks for reading. Lord willing, we’ll see you next time.
