A non-existent Clean Air Zone in Greater Manchester was displayed for drivers looking up directions on Google Maps, the city’s transport body said.

Transport for Greater Manchester said on Monday that Google had been informed and was working to fix the issue.

“We have been made aware of an incorrect alert about a Clean Air Zone on Google Maps,” said a representative of Transport for Greater Manchester.

“We have reported this to Google who have confirmed that it will now be corrected.”

On Sunday and Monday, when plotting a route into Manchester from the outside, Google Maps displayed a Clean Air Zone around the city and warned that drivers could be charged for non-compliance.

The application displayed a link to a 2022 news article from Manchester World where it said drivers could obtain further details on how the scheme worked.

The CAZ was proposed in 2019, and would have come into place in 2023, but was never implemented.

A commuter from Liverpool told the BBC that he noticed the warning appearing for the first time on his commute on Sunday, and said it again appeared on Monday.

No such warning appeared on other apps, such as Apple Maps or Waze.

In December 2023, Manchester mayor Andy Burnham introduced a plan to invest in cleaner transport options instead of the proposed Clean Air Zone, and the CAZ was subsequently scrapped.

As of late Monday, the warning did not appear to be displayed on Google Maps.
