OpenAI’s initial hardware product is planned to be a doughnut-shaped, battery-powered device with moving parts that can be easily carried around in one hand, Bloomberg reported, citing unnamed sources.

The AI start-up has been aggressively pushing ahead with plans to create a line of hardware, a strategy that Apple has targeted with a lawsuit alleging that OpenAI, which has hired numerous former Apple staff, stole its proprietary ideas.

OpenAI carried out an internal investigation into whether its hardware initiative had used proprietary information from Apple, and found that it hadn’t, the Bloomberg report cited unnamed people as saying.

The speaker product was designed in collaboration with LoveFrom, a studio founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive, but OpenAI believes it is distinct from anything Apple has so far come up with, Bloomberg’s report said.

Ive also co-founded Io Products, which was acquired by OpenAI in 2025 as part of its hardware effort.

The OpenAI speaker product uses upscale materials such as high-quality metal, and the company has reportedly internally discussed a potential price tag of $300 to $400 (£225 to £300).

Apple made reference in its lawsuit to OpenAI allegedly asking a long-standing Apple supplier to develop a metal-finishing technique similar to what it offers.

The OpenAI gadget includes moving parts and lights to indicate when it’s listening and to make interactions feel more personal, an earlier report said.

It’s intended to be easy to carry around a home, and interacts with users in a similar way to ChatGPT’s voice mode, but reportedly uses more advanced models for more human-like interactivity.

Apple makes home speakers, but so far none is as AI-centric as what OpenAI is reportedly working on, and it has not introduced a battery-powered model.

The product is reportedly aimed for availability in 2027, with a launch potentially later this year.
