'The Acolyte' Season 2 Was Unlike Anything 'Star Wars' Has Seen Before

A live-action Star Wars TV show created by Leslye Headland (Russian Doll), The Acolyte aired its first and only season on Disney+ in 2024, leaving many questions unresolved when it wasn't renewed. Star Dafne Keen (Logan, His Dark Materials), who played Jedi Padawan Jecki Lon, recently teased the never-made second season while talking to MovieWeb:
Season 2 was going to be incredible. Like, I remember right now with Leslye Headland from the show, and she was telling me everything that she found, and it was so sick...It was going to be incredible.
The Acolyte was set around 100 years before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, and revolved around a tragedy that was covered up by the Jedi order. The show ended with Osha, a former Jedi Padawan played by Amandla Stenberg, giving in to the Dark Side and becoming the acolyte of a mysterious Sith Lord played by Manny Jacinto. The season also ended with the reveal of a major figure from Star Wars lore. We'll never get to see where any of that led, which is doubly disappointing given Keen's description.
Disney chose not to renew The Acolyte at a time when it was pulling back on making Star Wars shows in general, with executive Alan Bergman claiming that the first season simply wasn't popular enough to justify the cost. But there were other controversies swirling around The Acolyte. While plenty of people offered good faith criticisms of the series, there was also a lot of vitriolic backlash, much of it aimed at people of color in the cast, like Stenberg.
Keen remembered this aspect of the series as well. "I think what's so interesting is so many people really hopped on the hate," she said. "The audience didn't actually know what the conclusion was."
Disney now has far fewer live-action Star Wars TV shows in production than it used to, with the second season of Ahsoka being the only one on the horizon; expect new episodes to come out early next year. On the movie side of things, a new film called Star Wars: Starfighter is due out on May 28, 2027. Starfighter will feature Ryan Gosling and be set after the events of 2019's The Rise of Skywalker, part of Disney's attempt to move forward with the franchise. As for Keen, you can see her in the upcoming movies The Marshmallow Experiment and Night Comes.
