Following a disappointing theatrical run for Supergirl, DC Studios hopes to deliver a much more warmly received story with the release of Lanterns on HBO Max on Aug. 16. This will be the first live-action project centered on the Green Lantern Corps since Ryan Reynolds' disastrous solo movie in 2011, and also the first live-action depiction of Lantern John Stewart (nearly played by Wayne T. Carr in Zack Snyder's Justice League). The series was first announced as part of DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn's original Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate in 2023, setting up an exciting story for the Lanterns in this new universe.
Led by Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Lanterns puts the two together as reluctant allies conducting a murder investigation in a small Nebraska town. The series spans multiple time periods in the new DCU, showing Hal's early days training John as a new Lantern and also moving a decade into the future. The marketing tour has teased an exciting new chapter in this group's long legacy, teasing a fresh look for the Lantern costume and the Lantern Ring's powers. Now, as Season 1 gets ready to start streaming, its fate for the future is also set in stone.
Speaking with Screen Rant at the red carpet for DC Studios' Lanterns, co-creator Damon Lindelof confirmed that the writer's room for Season 2 has already started under co-creator/showrunner Chris Mundy. He also teased that the show could have even more in the works, but for now, Mundy is focused on the immediate future:
"If it's successful and people love it, there's a lot of runway to launch into future seasons. But I think Chris Mundy has already started a new writers' room, figuring out what new stories could be for 'Lanterns.'"

Thus far, little is known about the core plot for Lanterns Season 1, although DC Studios released the first five minutes of footage to highlight Pierre and Chandler's introductions into the series. Highlighting John Stewart's upbringing and mental fortitude, the clip shows the hero training with his father as a child and going to the gym as an adult before Hal Jordan pulls up to meet him for Lantern duty.
After this series ends, Pierre will bring John Stewart into 2027's Man of Tomorrow in theaters, continuing the character's story alongside other heroes such as Superman, Mr. Terrific, Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Blue Beetle. Lanterns Season 2 is unlikely to debut until after that movie, meaning details about its plot won't be ready to share for some time.
Episode 1 of Lanterns Season 1 will debut on HBO Max on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026.
