Upper Merion leadership votes no to proposed data center

Дата публикации: 13-08-2026 17:15:08

The Upper Merion Board of Supervisors voted no on a developer’s proposal to build a 4.6 million-square-foot data center complex in Montgomery County on Thursday.
The vote comes one day after the developer, Brian O’Neill of MLP Ventures, filed a lawsuit on Aug. 12 asking a judge to order the Upper Merion Township Board of Supervisors to grant an extension for the project’s land development application.
A judge in the Court of Common Pleas ordered the injunction overturned on Aug. 13 which allowed for the township’s board to make their final decision on the proposed data center.
The legal action came one day after residents packed a planning commission meeting at Upper Merion Middle School on Wednesday, Aug. 12, with many stepping up to the microphone to speak against the proposed development.
The proposed project consists of a cluster of five locations that would total approximately 4.6 million square feet — an area larger than Philadelphia International Airport.
Residents said they are concerned about potential health and environmental impacts, additional strain on the power grid and other consequences they believe could come with the development.
O’Neill had previously defended the plan, arguing that the project would comply with regulations and would not negatively affect the community. He has also emphasized potential economic benefits, saying the development could generate $55.4 million annually in new local tax revenue and support 15,000 jobs a year.
When speaking with NBC10 after the vote on Thursday, O’Neill said that he and his lawyers are planning to appeal.
