Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay will pilot a resolution on Wednesday in the state Assembly urging the Union Government to permanently maintain the strength of Lok Sabha at 543, official sources said.

Days after holding a meeting of all parties that are part of the government, including the Congress and those that support his regime from outside -- the Left parties -- Vijay will move a resolution in the House to urge the Centre to maintain the Lok Sabha-Rajya Sabha ratio at 2.2 : 1.

The government sponsored resolution is expected to urge the Centre to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in the 2029 election to the Lok Sabha without delay, based on the existing 543 seats in the Lok Sabha.

The government is all set to argue that in case the delimitation is carried out by the Centre based on any census taken after 1971, the parliamentary representation of southern states, including Tamil Nadu, which have effectively controlled their population will be permanently affected.

On August 8, a Vijay-led meeting of Tamil Nadu MPs belonging to alliance and friendly parties, decided to oppose in total, the proposed delimitation exercise of the Union Government.

The meeting was boycotted by the main opposition party, the DMK, and key Dravidian party, the AIADMK, which dubbed the deliberations a "farce" and a "hurriedly staged drama" respectively.

In that meeting, the MPs had demanded that the ratio of seats between Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha must remain at 2.2:1.

It was unanimously decided to adopt a resolution in the State Assembly to permanently safeguard the rights of Tamil Nadu and the other south Indian states in this matter.
