Congress MP alleges negligence by BMC in pre-monsoon works

Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad on Wednesday (August 12, 2026) alleged that negligence in pre-monsoon works by the civic body was responsible for the landslip on a chawl in the Sakinaka area, in which seven people were killed.

She alleged the civic administration had failed to act on her request, raised in April, to conduct a safety audit of vulnerable areas in Kurla and Ghatkopar and to construct protective walls at dangerous locations.

“Unfortunately, little work was done on my demand for audit of vulnerable areas and construction of protective walls,” Ms. Gaikwad said, demanding that responsibility for the landslip be fixed and strict action taken against those responsible.

She accused the BMC of failing to undertake adequate preventive measures before the monsoon and acting only after a tragedy. - PTI
