The battle for the Jeweled Shillelagh is set to resume.

USC and Notre Dame are slated to play their next rivalry game in Week 1 of the 2030 season at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Trojans announced in a press release on Monday morning. It will be the first of a four-game, home-and-home series.

“This benefits everyone,” head coach Lincoln Riley told reporters. “It benefits USC, it benefits Notre Dame. I think this benefits college football. This is important. We know it’s important to our fan base, we know it’s important to our alumni, to the former players and coaches, but we also know what’s important to us doing the best thing for USC.”

The rivalry was called off indefinitely in December, but reports at the time had speculated that the series would resume in 2030.

The news adds to significant buzz surrounding the Trojans, who started fall training camp on Friday and had their official in-house media day on Monday.

In addition to the Trojans signing the top-ranked 2026 recruiting class in the nation and consequently bringing in 35 freshmen, the Bloom Football Performance Center is nearing completion with an official media tour scheduled for Thursday.

“I know this (series) is a few years down the road,” Riley said. “We’ve got a lot to focus in on right now, but we’re certainly not here pretending that this game was anything but extremely important and we’re glad to have it back.”

One of USC’s stipulations in the agreement was to play the game early in the season, but not necessarily the season opener. This marks a departure from previous seasons when the game was played either in the middle or end of the season.

“It remains important for us to play this game early in the season, as it allows us to schedule competitively with our Big Ten peers and takes into account the health and best interests of our student-athletes and program,” Athletic Director Jen Cohen said in a statement released by USC.

“We are excited for our fans, and we look forward to more memorable matchups and unforgettable games between the Trojans and the Irish.”

Notre Dame football head coach Marcus Freeman had not offered a comment regarding the rivalry as of Monday afternoon, but the team posted a video on social media featuring a highlight reel of plays against USC with the caption “Continuing the greatest intersectional rivalry in college football.”

A home-and-home series between Notre Dame and Indiana for 2030 and 2031 was canceled Monday at Indiana’s request, according to reports. Instead of playing the Hoosiers to open the season in 2030, the Irish will now play the Trojans.

For the next two years, Notre Dame has filled the void that the rivalry hiatus left with a home-and-home series with BYU, the 2025 Big 12 Conference runner-up.

Riley has been an advocate of resuming the rivalry, and doubled down on that stance during his opening press conference at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago in late July. Multiple players at USC’s media day on Monday agreed.

“It’s a great rivalry,” offensive lineman Elijah Paige said. “It’s an awesome game. We play a lot of awesome games – that’s the great thing about going to USC. And yeah, definitely excited that that rivalry will be continued.”

The long-distance rivalry has been played 96 times since it began in 1926, and USC holds a 37-53-5 all-time record against Notre Dame. The Trojans have lost the past three games against the Fighting Irish, including a 34-24 loss in South Bend last season.
