LetinAR plans to develop an ultra-lightweight, ultra-thin optical module for artificial intelligence (AI) glasses. With support from South Korea's Ministry of SMEs and Startups, the company aims to cut the module's thickness by about half and conduct mass-production validation with global customers.
LetinAR said August 14 that it was selected for the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' Global TIPS research and development (R&D) program. The company will receive a total of 5 billion won in R&D funding over four years.
Global TIPS is a program that links private investment with government R&D funding to support technology companies in advancing their technologies and entering overseas markets.
The development target is to reduce the thickness of the existing 7.5-millimeter optical module to 3.5 millimeters. LetinAR aims to develop an optical module that cuts thickness by 53% while maintaining the field of view and image quality.
The product is intended for AI glasses with a size and design similar to conventional eyeglasses. LetinAR will then pursue product improvements, mass-production validation with global customers and overseas market expansion.
LetinAR designs, develops and manufactures optical modules for AI glasses. It completes its products using its proprietary PinTILT and PinMR technologies. The company also applies a plastic injection-molded lens structure. It handles the entire process in-house, from optical-system design and simulation to lens manufacturing, module assembly and performance evaluation.
LetinAR has supplied mass-produced smart glasses products to Japan's NTT and Dynabook. It has also collaborated with Swiss augmented-reality (AR) helmet maker AGIS Rider. The company is currently pursuing partnerships with multiple global companies.
In May, LetinAR raised 27.8 billion won in a pre-initial public offering (pre-IPO) funding round. Its cumulative investment has reached 62.5 billion won. Major investors include Korea Development Bank, Daesung Private Equity, Kakao, Naver, LG, Epson and KDDI.
