After 78 consecutive cuts made, World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler is about to have the weekend off for the first time in nearly four years.

Scheffler is currently projected to be on the wrong side of the cut line at the Genesis Scottish Open just one week before The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

It caps off an uncharacteristic rough patch between majors for Scheffler after he lost the Travelers Championship to Viktor Hovland on a Monday morning playoff in Connecticut two weeks ago.

Now, the four-time major champion will be set to practice for The Open a bit earlier than expected after his poor showing at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick.

Scheffler started his tournament with a two-under 68 on Thursday before shooting a two-over 72 on Friday. While being even par through 36 holes would normally be a non-issue, the projected cut is at two-under - leaving Scheffler out in the cold.

Scheffler hasn't missed a cut since August of 2022 when he was eliminated early at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, one of the final FedEx Cup events.

Moreover, this will mark the first time that Scheffler will finish outside of the top-25 in a PGA Tour event since he tied for 33rd at the 2024 BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado.

'I got off to a tough start, and then on the back nine I didn't feel like I was hitting it close enough to give myself enough opportunities,' Scheffler told reporters in Scotland on Friday. 

'I think that's what it really comes down to. I got off to a poor start and didn't really hit it close enough to give myself a bunch of looks, and that's how you shoot over par.' 

Scheffler's streak of 78 straight cuts made was 51 greater than the next-closest streak, held by Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick.

Those 78 cuts make up the fifth-longest streak in PGA Tour history. He came just eight cuts short of tying Hale Irwin's 86 cut streak from 1975-1978.

He also sits behind Jack Nicklaus (105), Byron Nelson (113) and the unsurprising all-time leader in made cuts, Tiger Woods - who played weekend golf 142 consecutive times from 1998 to 2005. 

'It's a little different now with some of the signature events not having cuts,' Scheffler said. 'But, you know, I don't think I finished outside of the top 20 or something like that many times this year.

'I'm definitely proud of the consistency and wish I had a couple days over the weekend to make up some ground. But overall, get down to Birkdale a little earlier than expected and get used to a new course.'
