“A Profound Betrayal”: We Have A New Update On How Nick Reiner Allegedly Carried Out The Murder Of His Parents, Rob And Michele Reiner

We've got another update on the murder case against Nick Reiner, who was accused of killing his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, last December.

For a reminder, the Hollywood director and his wife were tragically found dead in their Los Angeles home on Dec. 14, having both suffered apparent stab wounds. Prosecutors believe that Nick, 32, fatally stabbed his parents in a bedroom in the early hours of the morning before fleeing the property. The night that the killings took place, Rob, Michele, and Nick had all attended Conan O’Brien’s holiday party, where Rob and his son allegedly engaged in a "very loud argument."
Nick was arrested about six hours after his parents' bodies were discovered. He faced charges of two counts of first-degree murder, with special circumstances, including the use of a knife. In February, Nick pleaded not guilty to the killings.
He is currently being held in a high-security unit at the Los Angeles County Twin Towers Correctional Facility. Now, in the latest update on the case, we have learned that a Los Angeles grand jury returned an indictment on two counts of first-degree murder, which will replace the original murder counts filed against Nick last year.
The indictment, which was returned in July and unsealed on Aug. 12, allows prosecutors to skip California's preliminary hearing process. Crucially, the indictment adds a special circumstance allegation that Nick allegedly "committed the murders by means of lying in wait," in addition to the use of a knife.
"This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing," the prosecution said in a statement. "We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice."
The new allegation means that Nick is now eligible for the death penalty; however, a decision on whether to seek the death penalty will apparently be made at a later date. Nick has pleaded not guilty to the updated charges and is being held on no bail. He is scheduled to return for a pretrial hearing on Sept. 15.
