Dodge is bringing back the GLH nameplate on a new performance-focused hot hatch, CEO Matt McAlear confirmed this week — and if you know your Mopar history, that three-letter badge carries serious weight. GLH stands for "Goes Like Hell," and the original Omni GLH earned every syllable of it.
The announcement pegs the new GLH as a replacement for the Hornet, the rebadged Alfa Romeo Tonale that never quite clicked with Dodge's core audience. This time, Dodge says it's building something with performance credentials that people "didn't quite see coming" — which, intentionally or not, is exactly how enthusiasts described the original GLH back in 1984.

The original Omni GLH is one of the more improbable performance cars in American automotive history. Dodge handed Carroll Shelby a front-wheel-drive economy hatchback — the kind of car that shared showroom space with grocery-getter Chevettes and base-model Escorts — and asked him to make it fast. He did.
Shelby's team fitted the Omni with a turbocharged 2.2-liter four-cylinder, tuned the suspension, and sharpened the whole package into something that could genuinely embarrass larger, heavier cars off the line. The GLH was quick enough to earn respect in an era when "performance car" almost exclusively meant V8 muscle. It proved the platform didn't have to be exotic for the result to be serious — a lesson that still resonates in the hot-hatch segment today.
The nameplate escalated further with the GLHS — Goes Like Hell S'more — which Shelby produced in limited numbers and pushed output even higher. Those cars became instant collector pieces, and the GLH name settled into Mopar lore as a badge that meant something specific: unexpected speed from an unlikely package.
What Dodge Is Actually Building This Time

Details on the new GLH are still thin, but Stellantis head of North American brands Tim Kuniskis has framed it clearly: this is "the next generation of Hornet, but the way we should have done it the first time." That's a pointed admission that the Hornet missed the mark, and the GLH is the correction.
The new model is expected to be a Hornet-sized crossover — not a traditional low-slung hatchback — powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder. Dodge has confirmed a standard GLH variant at launch, with a hotter SRT version to follow. McAlear has been explicit that Dodge won't enter a segment unless it can claim best-in-class performance, which sets a high bar for whatever the SRT tune ultimately delivers.
McAlear also positioned the GLH as a deliberate entry point into the Dodge lineup — a way to pull younger buyers in at an accessible price before they step up to a Charger or Durango. "It absolutely is a growing segment, and we see an opportunity there from a profitability standpoint and an entry level into the brand," he told Automotive News.
Can The New GLH Actually Live Up To The Badge?

That's the real question, and it's a fair one. The original GLH earned its reputation by being genuinely surprising — a car that looked like nothing and went like hell. The new model faces a harder version of that challenge: it has to live up to a name that already carries expectations, in a segment where the Golf GTI, GR Corolla, and Civic Type R have spent decades defining what credible hot-hatch performance looks like.
A crossover body raises some eyebrows in that context. Hot-hatch credibility has traditionally come from low weight, sharp handling, and a direct connection between driver and road — attributes that get harder to deliver as ride height and body mass climb. Dodge knows this, which is likely why McAlear keeps emphasizing that the GLH will have "some ideas that we're working on that's really going to separate it and be unique to market."
The Shelby connection isn't replicable — Carroll Shelby passed in 2012 — but the spirit of the original GLH is. Build something in an unlikely package, make it faster than it has any right to be, and let the performance do the talking. If Dodge pulls that off, the badge will mean something again. If it doesn't, GLH risks becoming another nameplate that traded on nostalgia and delivered a crossover.
The SRT variant is the one to watch. That's where Dodge will either validate the GLH name or expose the gap between heritage and execution. Gearheads who grew up on the Omni deserve more than a badge — they deserve a car that earns it.
