Jared has spent 15 years covering the auto industry, getting his first break with autoX—one of Asia’s biggest auto magazines. Since 2010, he has reviewed hundreds of cars and motorbikes around the world, worked with Top Gear, Autocar, Evo, Motoring World, and Quattroruote, served on the IMOTY jury for five years, and is a founding member of the Automotive Journalist Association of India (AJAI).

Having rubbed elbows with automotive industry leaders for 15 years, Jared is practically fluent in "car guy" lingo, and rumor has it that he once convinced a car to start just by giving it a pep talk. Now the managing editor of HotCars, Jared has the challenging task of herding a team of car enthusiasts and turning their passion into coherent articles. A true motorcycle lover, he also spearheads motorcycle content for TopSpeed. Jared is now based out of Orlando, but you will still probably find him riding through the Himalayas or bashing through desert sand dunes in a 4x4, because he has trouble fitting into sports cars these days.

Forget everything you expect from a three-row SUV. Lucid has taken its spacious electric Gravity, handed it the good stuff from the ferocious Air Sapphire, and created something powerful enough to make legitimate supercars feel insecure. The new Gravity GT-S still has seven seats, a huge cargo area, and enough interior space to keep an entire family comfortable. However, pressing the accelerator unleashes more than 1,000 horsepower and the sort of acceleration normally associated with low-slung exotics. It even packs more muscle than the mighty Corvette ZR1. This is not simply a quick luxury SUV with blue brake calipers and an aggressive badge. It is a supercar killer wearing one of the most practical disguises imaginable.

The New Lucid Gravity GT-S Unleashes 1,070 Horsepower

The Gravity GT-S produces a ridiculous 1,070 horsepower, making it America’s most powerful three-row SUV, according to Lucid Motors. That figure also places this family-sized SUV monster in extremely serious company. Chevrolet’s all-wheel-drive Corvette ZR1 produces 1,064 hp, meaning the Lucid technically has six more horses. The comparison becomes even crazier when you remember that the ZR1 is a purpose-built two-seat supercar, while the Gravity can carry seven adults and their luggage. The Corvette fights back with its acceleration.

The ZR1 can launch from zero to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds, while the Gravity GT-S requires 3.1 seconds. Losing eight-tenths to one of the quickest Corvette ever built is hardly embarrassing for a massive three-row SUV. In fact, getting this close should concern everything else on the road. Lucid’s SUV also has more power than the Lamborghini Revuelto, which produces 1,001 hp. The Lamborghini reaches 62 mph in 2.5 seconds, but it costs several times more, seats two people, and offers considerably less room for suitcases.

The Gravity GT-S is even quicker on paper than the Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato, which needs 3.4 seconds to race to 60 mph. No, the Lucid will not deliver the sound or theater of a naturally aspirated Lamborghini V10. It can, however, leave plenty of exotic machinery staring at its taillights while six passengers enjoy the show. And that says a lot about where Lucid wants to offer in terms of performance.

Lucid did a lot more to make the car look awesome to. The new performance flagship receives the Dynamic Handling Package as standard equipment, bringing independent rear-wheel steering and an adaptive three-chamber air suspension. Rear-wheel steering should help the large Gravity change direction with far more enthusiasm than its dimensions suggest. It can improve maneuverability at lower speeds while making the SUV feel more stable when the driver releases all 1,070 hp.

The adaptive suspension automatically lowers the Gravity GT-S at speed, reducing its center of gravity and helping it cut through the air more efficiently. Lucid says the system enhances agility and ride comfort, allowing the GT-S to attack a winding road without punishing everyone sitting behind the driver. There are also several visual warnings that this is the most dangerous Gravity in the family. Blue exterior accents and matching blue brake calipers provide some Air Sapphire flavor without covering the SUV in enormous wings, vents, or racing stripes.

Inside, the Mojave PurLuxe Premium cabin receives blue stitching, piping, seatbelts, and a blue marker on the steering wheel. Lucid Bear logos are embossed into the front headrests, presumably giving passengers something adorable to look at before the driver pins them against their seats.

Supercar Performance In A Family SUV Starts At $125,900

The Lucid Gravity GT-S starts at $125,900 before taxes, registration, options, and other charges. That is serious money for an SUV, but it looks rather different when compared with the supercars capable of matching its power and acceleration.

The Corvette ZR1 starts much higher, while a Lamborghini Revuelto lives in an entirely different financial galaxy. Neither offers three rows of adult seating nor the Gravity’s cargo capacity. The Lucid therefore occupies a wonderfully strange position as a practical luxury SUV with enough performance to gate-crash a supercar gathering.

Orders are open now, although the Gravity GT-S will be sold exclusively in the United States. Lucid will give it a global public debut during Monterey Car Week, displaying the SUV beside the 1,234-hp Air Sapphire at Pebble Beach.
