Phyllis Dorn Burnham

RAYMOND – Phyllis Dorn Burnham died peacefully with family by her side on July 25, 2026, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice Home in Scarborough, Maine.

Phyllis was born in 1936 in the small, rural tannery town of Elkland, Pa. to Harry Dorn and Genevieve Darby.

Phyllis met Harold Nichols Burnham, Jr. (Hal) in Philadelphia while she studied at Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing and he at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. They married in 1958 at the Oak Street Friends Meeting in Portland, Maine.

After living in Burlington, Vt., where Phyllis did private duty nursing, the couple returned to Portland where Hal grew up. There, Phyllis opened and staffed the University of Maine’s first student health office while working towards a master’s degree in nursing.

Phyllis and Hal then moved to Turkey Creek, Ky. and worked across the river in West Virginia at Miners’ Memorial Hospital, where son Jonathan was born in1962. In 1963, they returned to Maine, where Harold established a family medicine practice in Gorham, and daughter Margo was born in 1964. After raising children, Phyllis returned to nursing serving as the Raymond Elementary School nurse until she retired.

Phyllis and family spent every summer on Sebago Lake at Wind-in-Pines in Raymond, the Burnham family cottage resort business founded in 1938. In 1963, she began co-managing Wind-in-Pines, which she continued well into her 80s. Phyllis and Hal moved from Gorham to Wind in Pines permanently in 1987. She loved her role as Wind in Pines camp host and brought magic and fun to guests for generations, especially to young campers.

Phyllis’ many interests included raising dogs and cats, antiquing, flower gardening, cooking, refinishing furniture, rockhounding, and her greatest love—painting flowers, animals, portraits and nature scenes.

Hal died in 2013 and her brother Dennis in 2016. She is survived by son Jonathan and wife Debby, daughter Margo and husband Kenneth; grandsons, James and Phineas; great granddaughter Willow; sister Cindy; sister-in-law Carolyn; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and grandchildren and great grandchildren by marriage. She will forever be truly missed by all.

A celebration of life open house will be held on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026, 1 to 4 p.m., with invited reflections at 3:30 p.m., at Bircholm (Phyllis’ home), 40 Wind in Pines Road, Raymond, ME 04071.

Arrangements are in the care of Hall Funeral Home in Casco where condolences and tributes may be shared at http://www.hallfuneralhome.net.
