BRUNSWICK – Anne Compagnone Bramsen, 98, of Brunswick, Maine, and Alexandria, Va., died peacefully on July 28, 2026.

Born in Netcong, N.J., on June 29, 1928, Anne was a proud first-generation American and the youngest of nine children born to Almerida and Antonio Compagnone. Her parents made the journey from Naples, Italy to Ellis Island and built a new life in America, and Anne lived that dream fully, holding a deep, lifelong love of country exemplified through service.

Anne attended school in Netcong and graduated from St. Michael’s School. A bright and dedicated student, she then graduated from Netcong High School at the age of 15, where she was known affectionately as “Campie.” Like many women of the Greatest Generation, Anne did her part to serve the nation after completing school in the 1940s. She was hired by the U.S. Civil Service Commission as a stenographer at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, N.J., which at the time was one of the nation’s biggest large-caliber ammunition plants supporting the U.S. war effort against the Axis powers. A family committed to service, three of Anne’s four brothers served in World War II — one in North Africa in the U.S. Army and two in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theater, with one brother on the battleship USS SOUTH DAKOTA and the other on the USS BENNETT (DD-473).

In the post-war years, Anne’s career took her to New York City, N.Y. where she worked for Twentieth Century Pictures. In 1950, she married U.S. Air Force pilot Peter J. Bramsen, a World War II 8th Air Force B-17 pilot who was shot down and imprisoned as a POW at Stalag Luft I in Barth, Germany. With Peter’s continued service in the Air Force after they married, the couple’s following two and half decades took them to Air Force bases in Newfoundland; San Bernadino, Calif.; Zullinger, Pa.; and Hagerstown, Md. where Peter served as a test pilot. Later stations of duty included Woodbridge, England (79th Tactical Fighter Squadron) and Westover AFB in Chicopee, Mass. where Major Bramsen commanded specialized maintenance operations for Strategic Air Command (SAC). Along the way, the couple had five children – all born at different duty stations around the world.

After Peter’s retirement from the Air Force in 1964, the family returned to a home on Lake Hopatcong, N.J. Their five children attended Rev. George A. Brown Memorial Catholic School and Pope John XXIII High School in Sparta, N.J. With four of their five children graduated from college, Anne and Peter made their last adventurous move together to Harpswell where they lived for the next 20 years until Peter’s death in 1998 – living in Harpswell longer than in any other place during their almost 50-year marriage. Anne continued to serve the military and the community, including at the then-Brunswick Naval Air Station pharmacy as a Red Cross volunteer and at St. John’s Catholic School. After 40 happy total years in Harpswell, Anne moved to Alexandria, Va. in 2014, where she continued active international travel and enjoyed features of the Washington, D.C. area including regular Kennedy Center opera attendance, events with St. Mary’s Basilica parish clubs in Alexandria, Va., and even one special White House Christmas party. She actively supported Catholic parish, seminarian, and higher education initiatives. Most importantly for her values and culture, she delighted in hosting friends and family for holidays and countless events to gather loved ones around her table.

Anne is survived by her five children, Paul M. “Hans” Bramsen of Bath, Jeffrey Bramsen of Arlington, Va., Linda A. McLeod of Alexandria, Va., Suzanne C. Nimnicht of Portland, Ore., and Kristine M. Conway of Falls Church, Va. She is also survived by seven beautiful grandchildren; 11 wonderful great-grandchildren; beloved nieces and nephews, and dear friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 39 Pleasant St., Brunswick. Internment to follow at St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Brunswick.
